For U.S. buyers, Samsung.com’s observed unlocked Fold8 price starts at $1,899.99 for 256GB; the Fold7’s $1,999.99 figure was its 2025 launch price, not a matched current price. The right choice depends more on screen size and shape than on the generation number.
How do the Galaxy Z Fold7 and base Fold8 compare?
Samsung has changed the base model’s proportions rather than simply carrying the Fold7’s screen dimensions forward. The Fold7 opens to an 8.0-inch main display and has a 6.5-inch cover display. The base Fold8 has a 7.6-inch main display in a 4:3 unfolded orientation and a 5.5-inch cover display with a 10:16 aspect ratio. Diagonals are manufacturer-stated; rounded corners and camera openings affect viewable area.

Samsung says Fold8 playback varies with network connection, settings, file format, brightness and battery condition, so its estimate is not a directly comparable real-world endurance result. The Fold8 listing pairs 12GB of memory with 256GB and 512GB storage, and 16GB with 1TB.

Which has the bigger screen?
The Fold7 has the larger stated diagonal for both screens: 8.0 versus 7.6 inches inside, and 6.5 versus 5.5 inches on the cover. Its cover screen is also a wider 21:9 display, while the Fold8’s cover ratio is 10:16. That difference affects how content and apps fit, so diagonal size alone does not describe the experience.

- A premium foldable smartphone featuring an 8.0" Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display, 6.5" cover display, 200MP main camera, Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, 4,400mAh battery, and a slim 215g design.
Samsung positions the base Fold8 as a content-focused, more compact format. If you want an 8-inch main display in Samsung’s 2026 foldable lineup, the Fold8 Ultra is a separate model; its size should not be attributed to the base Fold8.
What is the Fold8 price difference?
On the comparison available for the United States, the Fold8’s observed Samsung.com unlocked 256GB list price of $1,899.99 is $100 below the Fold7’s $1,999.99 U.S. starting launch MSRP from 2025. This compares a current store listing with a historical launch price, not equivalent live offers.

Is the Fold8 worth upgrading from the Fold7?
There is no universal upgrade winner: the most consequential change is the base model’s smaller screen format, not a straightforward increase in display size.
