For live streaming, it can encode video without relying on CPU-based software encoding, freeing the CPU for other work. It does not make encoding cost-free: the game, capture pipeline, settings, memory, and available encoder capacity can still affect performance.
What NVENC does
When you stream, captured video must be compressed into a format your streaming platform accepts. NVENC performs that encoding in dedicated hardware on supported NVIDIA GPUs rather than using the CPU to do the encoding in software. NVIDIA says NVENC has been present in NVIDIA GPUs beginning with the Kepler generation; exact capabilities depend on the GPU model and architecture. NVIDIA’s NVENC Application Note describes the encoder and its role.

NVIDIA’s January 30, 2025 NVIDIA NVENC OBS Guide says: “GeForce RTX GPUs have dedicated hardware encoders (NVENC), letting you capture and stream content without impacting GPU or CPU performance.” That is NVIDIA’s description, not an independent performance guarantee. In practice, encoding is only one part of a live setup: a demanding game, GPU load, capture and compositing, memory pressure, or unsuitable settings can still cause dropped frames or other performance problems.

Why NVENC matters for a live stream
With a compatible GPU and streaming application, NVENC gives you a hardware-encoding option that can reduce the CPU work required for encoding. That can be useful if you are streaming a game while running other CPU-heavy applications, or if CPU encoding is causing performance problems. It may also provide access to newer codecs on GPUs that support them.

NVENC is not automatically better than x264, the CPU-based software encoder, in every situation. The sources cited here do not establish a universal quality or performance winner. The result depends on the exact GPU and CPU, workload, bitrate, codec, platform support, and settings. You do not need to buy a new graphics card just because you stream: first check whether your current GPU has NVENC and supports the codec you intend to use.
Which codecs NVENC can encode
NVIDIA’s Video Codec SDK documentation lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 among NVENC’s supported codecs, but support varies by GPU generation and model. Check the NVENC Video Encoder API Programming Guide and the specifications for your exact GPU before choosing a codec. Do not assume that every NVIDIA GPU can encode every format.

- Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060
- Video Memory: 12GB GDDR6
- Memory Interface: 192-bit
- Output: DisplayPort x 3 (v1.4a) / HDMI 2.1 x 1.Avoid using unofficial software
- Digital maximum resolution: 7680 x 4320
Choose a codec in this order: first confirm what your platform accepts, then confirm that your GPU supports it, and then consider the bitrate, viewer compatibility, and workflow. A more efficient codec can help preserve quality at a lower bitrate, but codec efficiency alone does not guarantee a better stream for every viewer or service.
NVENC settings to check in OBS
OBS labels and available options can vary by version, operating system, and hardware. NVIDIA’s guide recommends the following starting points for streaming, subject to your platform’s current requirements:
Rank #3
- Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030
- Video Memory: 4GB DDR4
- Boost Clock: 1430 MHz
- Memory Interface: 64-bit
- Output: DisplayPort x 1 (v1.4a) / HDMI 2.0b x 1
- Encoder: Choose a hardware NVENC option in OBS’s streaming output settings if it is available. Select a codec your platform accepts and your GPU supports.
- Rate control: NVIDIA recommends CBR (constant bitrate) for streaming.
- Keyframe interval: NVIDIA recommends two seconds. Follow the platform’s current specification if it differs.
- Resolution and frame rate: Select values your upload connection and chosen bitrate can sustain. Higher resolution or frame rate requires more available bitrate to maintain image quality.
- Bitrate: Set it to a value supported by the platform and appropriate for your resolution, frame rate, and connection. Avoid relying on an old platform limit without checking the current official requirements.
These are NVIDIA guide recommendations, not settings guaranteed to suit every service, stream, or OBS version. Change one setting at a time and check OBS’s statistics for rendering or encoding lag and dropped frames. If the stream is unstable, reduce output demands or bitrate as appropriate, and verify your connection and platform requirements.
Choosing between NVENC codecs
NVIDIA’s January 30, 2025 guide recommends NVENC H.264 for Twitch. For YouTube, it describes NVENC AV1 on RTX 40-series hardware and NVENC HEVC otherwise. These are NVIDIA’s time-sensitive recommendations; check the current platform guidance and your exact GPU’s codec support before configuring a stream.

The same NVIDIA guide says AV1 on GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs is “~43% more efficient than H.264.” This is NVIDIA’s comparison, not an independent controlled test or a result guaranteed across platforms, bitrates, or workloads. Treat it as a vendor claim rather than a universal quality ranking.

- Try NVENC if your compatible NVIDIA GPU is already in your system and CPU encoding is limiting your streaming setup.
- Check another encoder or codec if your GPU lacks the codec you need, or your platform does not accept your preferred format.
- Do not purchase a GPU solely on the NVENC name. Confirm the model supports the codec and stream settings you need, and consider the overall system workload and platform requirements.
If you need a YouTube stream to keep running 24/7
NVENC handles encoding on a compatible GPU; it does not keep a local streaming computer running when that computer is switched off. If your goal is to keep an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube continuously, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The stream runs from the cloud, so no home computer, OBS session, or home connection has to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
