For a 24/7 broadcast, plan for recovery and local recording: streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable.
What “Shorts-style live” means
YouTube’s vertical live experience uses portrait video, and viewers can discover vertical live streams while browsing Shorts. YouTube’s wording is that viewers “can also find these live streams when browsing YouTube Shorts”; this is a discovery possibility, not a promise that a particular stream will appear in the feed. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.

There are two distinct ways to deliver portrait video:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Single portrait output: your encoder sends one vertical video feed. This is the simpler choice if the program is designed only for phones.
- Dual horizontal-and-vertical stream: YouTube Live Control Room can provide horizontal and vertical outputs for viewers using different experiences. When an external encoder supplies both, it needs the correct stream configuration and separate feeds. The vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started.
Choose based on the source material and audience. A portrait master sent as a single output avoids designing a horizontal version. Dual streaming is useful when you have both formats ready and want to serve horizontal and vertical viewers; it requires more careful setup and matching each feed to its key.

Prepare a portrait master
Frame for a phone screen
Use a portrait composition, with faces, captions, logos, and other essential details inside the central vertical safe area. A 9:16 export such as 1080 × 1920 is a practical example, not a YouTube resolution requirement. Keep text large enough to read on a phone and avoid placing important details near the edges, where interface elements or cropping can obscure them.
If you are adapting landscape footage, decide how to reframe each shot rather than stretching it. A crop can cut off faces or on-screen text; fitting the full landscape image into a portrait canvas can leave unused space. YouTube’s dual-stream layouts include choices such as center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. Preview the result and check the whole program, especially scenes where the subject moves.
Check the finished video
- Confirm the exported video is genuinely portrait and plays from beginning to end.
- Watch for black bars, accidental stretching, cropped captions, and cuts that become confusing in a tight crop.
- Listen for clean, continuous audio and check that it remains synchronized with the picture.
- For a loop, inspect the transition from the final frame and sound back to the first. Remove unintended gaps, abrupt volume changes, or a black flash if continuity matters.
- Keep a separate copy of the final file and confirm you have rights to every visual and audio element.
Choose the YouTube Live setup
Before creating the broadcast
- Enable live streaming. Make sure the channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled and verified. If this is a new channel or feature, allow for YouTube’s activation process before the planned start.
- Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Select the intended format and layout before going live. If you need dual streaming, configure both horizontal and vertical outputs before starting; you cannot add the vertical output after the broadcast has begun.
- Choose the correct encoder route. For one portrait feed, configure the encoder to send the portrait program. For third-party dual streaming, use RTMP(S), configure the second vertical stream key, and send the matching image format to each feed. Do not send the same incorrectly framed feed to both keys.
- Copy the matching stream URL and key into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or share it with anyone who does not need access.
- Inspect YouTube’s preview. Verify the selected layout, framing, and orientation before starting. Check that the preview reflects the intended feed, not just a locally visible picture in the encoder.
Dual streaming has feature differences between the vertical and horizontal experiences. Check the current options in YouTube’s Live Control Room instructions rather than assuming every feature behaves identically in both formats.

Set encoder output and test it
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for codec and bitrate choices. There is no single bitrate that suits every resolution, frame rate, encoder, and connection.
- Rate control: use CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: set a 2-second interval as YouTube recommends; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: use AAC or MP3, following YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- Connection: RTMPS is recommended for encrypted delivery when available.
- Upload capacity: YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. Leave sufficient headroom for a stable connection rather than selecting a bitrate that consumes all available upload capacity.
- Run a private or otherwise controlled test before the public launch, using the actual encoder, stream key, and intended layout.
- Include motion, scene changes, and speech or music in the test. A still image can conceal stuttering, audio problems, or a crop that fails when the subject moves.
- Check both the encoder preview and YouTube’s stream health indicators. Confirm that the picture is portrait, audio is present and synchronized, and the stream is not reporting connection or encoding problems.
- Repeat the test after changing the source, encoder settings, network, or dual-stream layout.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a speed test and monitoring stream health; a successful test is useful evidence about the tested setup, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation.
Plan operations for a 24/7 broadcast
Continuity and supervision
A continuous broadcast needs a plan for the encoder process, computer or server power, network outages, and recovery if the connection drops. Decide who will notice an interruption, how the encoder will be restarted, and how you will confirm that YouTube has resumed receiving the correct feed. YouTube’s setup guidance does not establish a guarantee that any encoder or stream will remain connected indefinitely.

For a do-it-yourself encoder setup, keep the machine powered, prevent sleep or automatic shutdown, use a stable wired connection where practical, and monitor stream health. Arrange recovery for both the encoder and network; restarting only one will not help if the other remains unavailable.
Archive and rewind limits matter after 12 hours
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on YouTube to preserve a 24-hour-plus session. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording backup; an external SSD is one optional way to store that recording, not a platform requirement. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers need to rewind, account for that limitation in the format you choose; do not assume that a live stream’s archive or rewind history will be complete. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.

You can consider ending and restarting the broadcast on a planned schedule to create separate streams rather than one extra-long session. This is an operational trade-off: each restart creates a distinct live stream, not one uninterrupted archive, and viewers may experience an interruption between them. Keep a local recording if retaining the full program matters.

Rights checks apply to every element
Confirm that you have the necessary rights for all footage, graphics, music, and other audio in the loop. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream if it detects it. A license alone may not prevent a Content ID interruption: for licensed third-party material, check whether the rights owner needs to add the channel to a Content ID allowlist before the broadcast. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Repetition is not automatic monetization eligibility
A video looping continuously is not automatically eligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy expects original, authentic viewer value and can apply to live streams; repetitive or mass-produced material can affect eligibility. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies, along with your channel’s eligibility and the features available to it. Vertical-feed discovery does not itself establish monetization eligibility, and horizontal and vertical live experiences may not offer identical features.

Where StreamNeo fits
If you do not want a home computer or encoder to run continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. It plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed. Its workflow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the cloud handles looping, so your computer can be off. See StreamNeo.
Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, support from the StreamNeo team, and 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers; the price is per slot, regardless of quality. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Billing terms can be a day, week, month, 6 months, or year, and you can cancel any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. Details are on the pricing page.
For a continuous portrait program, prepare a portrait file and playlist, then check the YouTube stream preview and format before relying on the broadcast. A cloud host changes where the loop runs; it does not change YouTube’s discovery, copyright, archive, or monetization rules.
Preflight and operations checklist
- Portrait master is correctly framed; faces, text, and graphics remain visible in the vertical safe area.
- Video, motion, sound, and loop transition have been reviewed.
- Single portrait or dual horizontal-and-vertical delivery has been chosen; layout is selected before starting.
- Correct stream URL and key are configured; dual-stream feeds and keys match their intended formats.
- Encoder uses CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (never over 4 seconds), and an audio codec supported by YouTube’s guidance.
- Upload capacity has been tested, and stream health has been checked during a real test.
- Power, network recovery, monitoring, and a local recording plan are in place.
- Archive and DVR expectations account for the over-12-hour limitations.
- Rights and any required Content ID allowlisting have been confirmed; the program is not assumed to qualify for monetization simply because it is live or vertical.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload the portrait recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams at the quality you uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. YouTube still controls feed discovery and its copyright, archive, and monetization policies.
