NDI (Network Device Interface) is a way for compatible cameras, computers and other devices to send and receive video, audio and metadata over an IP network. It is a connectivity technology, not a codec: NDI formats use different codecs and make different trade-offs in bandwidth, latency and image quality.

What NDI does

An NDI sender makes a source available on a network; an NDI-enabled receiver can find and use it. A source might be a camera, graphics system, mixer, capture card, media player or software application. NDI describes the connection as bidirectional and capable of carrying multiple streams over a shared network connection.

That does not mean every NDI device or application supports every format, or that any network can carry any number of streams reliably. Check both ends of the workflow and test the network under the resolution, frame rate and stream load you plan to use.

NDI is not a codec

NDI is the interface and transport workflow; the video format determines how the picture is encoded and affects bandwidth, latency and image quality. NDI’s format overview associates SpeedHQ with NDI High Bandwidth and H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC with NDI HX formats. The official overview does not provide a current, universal bitrate or latency table, so a single bandwidth figure cannot accurately describe every NDI stream. NDI’s technology overview explains the distinction.

NDI High Bandwidth and NDI HX

High Bandwidth and HX are NDI format families with different trade-offs, not separate connectivity standards. In general, the appropriate choice depends on the source and receiver support, the available network, and the importance of image quality and latency in the specific workflow.

NDI High Bandwidth

NDI associates SpeedHQ with its High Bandwidth format. Confirm that the sending and receiving devices support the required format and that the network can handle the intended workload; do not assume that a format label alone guarantees a particular bitrate or performance.

Set up a basic NDI workflow

  1. Check format support. Identify the NDI format your sender provides and confirm the receiver or software can accept it. Verify resolution and frame-rate support on both ends.
  2. Connect both devices to the network. Start with a wired connection where practical, particularly when reliability matters or several sources are involved. Confirm that the devices can reach one another.
  3. Install the relevant software. If your workflow needs NDI Tools, obtain it from NDI’s official Tools page and follow the installation guide for your system.
  4. Open the receiver and select the source. The exact menu depends on the application. If the source does not appear, use the discovery and network checks below rather than assuming the sender is offline.
  5. Test with the real workload. Check picture, audio, delay and stability at the intended resolution, frame rate and number of simultaneous streams. NDI’s network guidance recommends testing because results depend on the environment and settings.

Using NDI with OBS

NDI’s OBS page identifies the NDI plugin for OBS as unofficial and points users to a setup guide. It is not an official NDI plugin, and compatibility with every current OBS version is not established. Check the plugin’s setup instructions and compatibility information for the OBS version you run before relying on it for a production workflow. NDI for OBS.

Plan the network before adding sources

NDI’s network-interface guidance recommends setting the adapter to 1 Gbps Full Duplex or higher, if supported, to make maximum available throughput possible. This is adapter configuration guidance, not a guaranteed per-stream bandwidth requirement or a promise that every gigabit network can carry every NDI workload. Actual needs vary with format, resolution, frame rate, number of streams and network implementation. NDI Network Interface Settings.

Why an NDI source may not appear

  • The devices are not reachable. Confirm that the sender and receiver are connected to networks that can communicate. Check routing, VLANs and firewall rules with the network administrator where applicable.
  • The receiver does not support the sender’s format. Check format and resolution support in the sender, receiver and software documentation.
  • Discovery is restricted. NDI discovery commonly relies on network discovery mechanisms that may not pass between subnets or across multicast-restricted segments. NDI Discovery Service can act as a centralized registry and may help in those environments; its exact configuration depends on the network.
  • The issue is not necessarily discovery alone. Discovery tools can help diagnose registered senders, receivers, addresses and server connection settings, but they do not automatically fix firewall, VLAN, routing or compatibility problems.

NDI documents both NDI Discovery and Discovery Service. Consider the service when multicast discovery is restricted or a workflow spans network segments; follow the configuration guidance for your environment.

Licensing and device checks

NDI says its standard SDK is royalty-free subject to its terms. Developers distributing applications must follow the applicable attribution and implementation requirements. NDI also notes that AAC, H.264 and H.265 formats may require separate licensing, which is the developer’s responsibility. The NDI Advanced SDK has separate commercial-use instructions, so do not assume standard SDK terms apply to it. NDI SDK licensing.

NDI’s FAQ says it stopped selling NDI-HX upgrade licenses on December 31, 2025. That policy does not establish whether an individual camera already supports HX or whether its manufacturer offers another upgrade path. Check the exact model with its manufacturer. NDI FAQ.

Or let it run in the cloud
