Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a livestream, the broadcaster’s upload speed matters most: it must carry the stream’s configured bitrate, with extra capacity left for network variation and other devices. The right target depends on the platform, resolution, frame rate and codec. A speed-test result or advertised download speed alone cannot guarantee a stable broadcast.
Start with the stream’s bitrate, not the internet plan’s headline number
Bitrate is the amount of data your encoder sends each second. Your streaming platform’s recommended bitrate is the starting point for estimating the upload capacity you need. It is not, by itself, a broadband-plan requirement: your connection also needs headroom, and the usable upload can fluctuate.

For YouTube, the following are its recommended ingestion bitrates. H.264 and AV1/H.265 have different recommendations for some settings. Choose the row that matches the codec, resolution and frame rate you intend to stream.

| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 24 Mbps |
| 4K30 | 42 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 4K60 | 50 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance, observed in 2026. They are platform recommendations for sending a stream to YouTube, not guarantees of stability or minimum internet-plan speeds. For other platforms, check that platform’s current encoder guidance rather than assuming YouTube’s values apply.

- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
How much upload headroom should you leave?
Twitch’s How Do I Stream FAQ gives a general practice of allowing upload speed equal to the configured bitrate plus 30%. Its example says a 6 Mbps stream may require at least 8 Mbps upload. Treat this as Twitch’s general guidance, not a guarantee that a connection at that threshold will remain stable.
As a practical starting point, compare your measured upload with the platform’s recommended bitrate and leave room above it. If other people or devices are using the connection, their upload traffic can reduce what is available to your broadcast. Twitch notes this in its FAQ; YouTube likewise advises testing and monitoring stream health.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Measure the right connection under realistic conditions
- Choose your platform and stream settings. Decide on the resolution, frame rate and codec, then consult the platform’s current encoder table. For YouTube, use the table above.
- Measure upload, not just download. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Check the result while using the same network and general conditions you expect during the broadcast.
- Account for competing traffic. Uploads, video calls, backups and other people using the connection can take capacity away from the stream. A speed result taken when the network is idle may not reflect a busy household or workplace.
- Test the actual stream before relying on it. YouTube says to test before starting a live stream. Confirm that the stream is reaching the platform at the selected settings, then monitor stream health during the event.
A speed test measures the connection at a particular moment. It does not establish that the same upload rate will be sustained throughout a longer broadcast.
Broadcaster upload and viewer download are different
A broadcaster sends video out, so upload capacity is the key figure for going live. A viewer receives video, so download capacity is the relevant direction for watching. Do not use a viewer recommendation as a broadcaster upload requirement.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Twitch’s playback guidance lists viewer download recommendations of 3–6 Mbps or higher for 720p60, and 7–12 Mbps or higher for 1080p60. These figures are for playback, not for sending a stream. See Twitch’s Playback Issue Troubleshooting page for its viewer-side guidance.
What to do if the stream struggles
- The platform reports insufficient bitrate or the stream drops frames: compare the configured bitrate with your available upload and the platform’s recommendation. Try a lower resolution or frame rate, or a codec with a lower recommended bitrate if your encoder and platform support it.
- The speed test looks adequate, but the broadcast is unstable: repeat the test under realistic network use and run a pre-stream test. A single speed result is only a momentary measurement; monitor the platform’s stream-health indicators while live.
- The problem starts when others use the network: competing upload traffic may be consuming the headroom the stream needs. Reduce simultaneous uploads or use settings that require less bitrate, then test again.
- Viewers report buffering while your broadcast appears healthy: check the viewer’s download connection and playback conditions separately. Viewer download guidance does not diagnose the broadcaster’s upload.
Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines and Playback Issue Troubleshooting are platform-specific references; their guidance should not be treated as universal network thresholds for every service.

For a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream
If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos live on YouTube around the clock, the internet connection at home is not the only option. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera or to other platforms. You upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and start the stream. Its cloud service keeps running without a computer, OBS or home connection staying on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
