NASA’s Moon-to-Mars program is an evolving strategy and exploration architecture—not one spacecraft, a single mission, or a fixed list of flights. It sets goals for human exploration beyond Earth orbit, then organizes the capabilities and mission phases that could meet them. Artemis is its clearest current crewed exploration campaign, but the architecture also encompasses supporting systems, robotic lunar deliveries, and longer-term plans for human missions to Mars.
What NASA means by “Moon to Mars”
NASA’s Moon to Mars Objectives, published in September 2022, describe what the agency wants deep-space exploration to accomplish and why. They cover areas including lunar and planetary science, heliophysics, human and biological science, physical science, Mars infrastructure, transportation and habitation, operations, collaboration, and sustainability. The objectives establish goals without prescribing one specific launch vehicle, technology, or procurement method.

NASA calls those objectives “the cornerstone of the agency’s strategy for crewed exploration of deep space.” The architecture translates the goals into segments, functions, and hardware or service elements. NASA says it reviews and updates the architecture annually as technology, discoveries, and priorities change. NASA’s Moon to Mars Architecture: Strategy and Objectives
The four architecture segments
NASA’s components page groups the architecture into four segments. They describe a planning progression, not a catalogue of individually approved missions. NASA’s Moon to Mars architecture components

What missions and systems are associated with it?
Artemis: the central crewed lunar campaign
Artemis is NASA’s principal campaign for exploring the Moon, developing science and technology, learning to live and work on another world, and preparing for eventual human missions to Mars. Its associated systems include the Space Launch System (SLS), Orion, commercial human landing systems, spacesuits, surface mobility systems, and Gateway. Artemis is a campaign within the broader architecture, not a synonym for every Moon-to-Mars activity. NASA’s Artemis overview
NASA’s currently surfaced Artemis III mission page describes a four-person, low-Earth-orbit demonstration and lists 2027 as the launch year. That page’s description matters: older accounts often described Artemis III as a lunar landing, but the current page describes a demonstration intended to test systems needed for future lunar landings. The date is a listed target, not a guarantee. NASA’s Artemis III mission page

Commercial Lunar Payload Services: robotic deliveries
Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) is NASA’s initiative for buying commercial delivery of science and technology payloads to the Moon. Those robotic deliveries help test and refine technologies and integrate systems relevant to later crewed missions. They are distinct from crewed Artemis landings: a CLPS delivery carries payloads, not astronauts. NASA’s Artemis overview
Gateway: planned infrastructure in lunar orbit
Gateway is a planned space station in lunar orbit intended to support Artemis, lunar-surface missions, orbital science, and preparation for Mars. NASA’s mission page lists launch no earlier than 2027; this is a schedule statement, not a firm commitment. Separately, NASA’s components page says architecture content is being updated to align with February Artemis changes and March national policy initiatives, so the broader architecture remains subject to change. Mars Sample Return: robotic science, not a crewed Moon-to-Mars flight
Mars Sample Return (MSR) is a NASA-ESA robotic campaign intended to bring selected Martian samples to Earth for detailed laboratory analysis. NASA says Perseverance has collected and cached samples since landing on Mars in 2021. MSR could improve knowledge relevant to future human exploration, but NASA Science describes it as robotic sample-return science—not a crewed Artemis mission. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to distinguish the architecture’s supporting capabilities
NASA identifies 12 supporting sub-architectures: autonomous systems and robotics; communications and positioning, navigation, and timing; data systems and management; habitation; human systems; in-situ resource utilization; infrastructure support; logistics; mobility; power; transportation; and utilization systems. These are capability areas, not twelve separate missions. NASA maps elements such as SLS and Orion to the architecture and expects other elements to be defined as it develops. NASA’s Moon to Mars architecture components
That distinction also helps when comparing programs or hardware: SLS and Orion support crew transport, a lander reaches the lunar surface, CLPS provides robotic payload delivery, Gateway is orbital infrastructure, and MSR is a robotic science campaign. They operate in different environments and serve different purposes, so they are not interchangeable spacecraft.

NASA’s FY 2026 exploration fact sheet describes substantial planned changes: transferring CLPS responsibility, creating a Commercial Mars Payload Services initiative for precursor and technology-demonstration missions, and an orderly Gateway program closeout during 2026. It also describes SLS and Orion as intended for Artemis II and III before planned retirement, with commercial transportation procurement for later missions. These are plans in a budget document, not confirmation that the actions have happened. NASA FY 2026 exploration fact sheet
That planning context is one reason not to treat the architecture as a settled mission manifest. For specific schedules, the relevant mission page provides a dated status; a budget document describes proposed or planned policy and program changes. Neither turns a target year into a guarantee.
