What Is My IP? Inside an Open-Source Tool for Checking VPN Routes

My-IP-Info combines IP-provider comparisons, WebRTC and DNS diagnostics, and CLI access in an open-source project documented for Cloudflare Workers.

When you search “what is my IP” after switching on a VPN or changing proxy settings, you see the address a particular service can observe—not a guarantee that every app on your device uses the same route. Doni Leong built My-IP-Info to make that check less cluttered and more informative, combining an IP lookup with provider comparisons, browser-based WebRTC and DNS diagnostics, and terminal access. The project is open source and documents self-hosting on Cloudflare Workers.

Why build another “what is my IP” page?

Leong describes the motivation in a first-person account: “Whenever I turn on a VPN or switch proxy setups, I always want to double check my IP address and make sure my traffic is actually routing where it should be.” My-IP-Info is his response to that practical check and to the ad-filled lookup pages he found frustrating.

The key distinction is what an IP lookup can establish. It reports the address visible to the service handling the request. After a route change, that is useful evidence about that request, but it does not prove that every browser tab, application, or connection on the device follows the same path.

What My-IP-Info checks

IP address and provider comparisons

Rather than relying on a single lookup, the project queries multiple IP information providers and shows their reported results together. Leong’s article names Cloudflare Trace, IPify, IP.SB, IPWhoIs, and IPIP.net. The repository README describes a broader set that also includes ip.guide, SeeIP, and icanhazip.com, among others. These are source-specific lists, not a promise that the integrations are exhaustive or permanent.

Providers may agree on the visible IP while returning different approximate locations. My-IP-Info plots reported coordinates on a map so users can see that disagreement. A map comparison makes differences easier to spot; it does not establish which provider is correct, nor does an IP-based location identify a person’s exact physical location.

WebRTC and DNS diagnostics

The project describes checking browser WebRTC ICE candidates and using unique subdomain queries for a DNS leak check. These are diagnostics for particular ways network information might be exposed while using a VPN or proxy. A result is not a certification that a VPN is secure or proof that every possible leak has been ruled out.

Use it in a browser or from a terminal

The browser interface is intended for a quick visual check, including the provider comparison and diagnostics. The project also documents a curl endpoint for terminal use: responses can be a plain IP address or formatted JSON or YAML, with additional API routes and formats described in the repository.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leong’s article says command-line output is selected using the request’s User-Agent, while JSON and YAML can be requested with query parameters. Consult the current API documentation for exact routes and parameter names rather than assuming that an article-era interface has not changed.

Open source and Cloudflare Workers deployment

The project is described as MIT licensed, and its repository documents deployment to a reader’s Cloudflare account using pnpm deploy. The article identifies React 18, TypeScript, Vite, and Leaflet on the frontend, with Hono running on Cloudflare Workers. It says static assets are served through the Worker. These are implementation details reported by the author and repository, not results of an independent technical audit.

The repository README and live site also describe local connection history, configurable providers and endpoints, latency measurement, and PWA installation. The live page says IP logging is not performed server-side and that history stays on the device. Those are project-published privacy descriptions; they should not be mistaken for independently verified measurements or an external privacy audit. Self-hosting gives a user control over their deployment choices, but it does not by itself establish how every configuration handles data.

What the tool can—and cannot—tell you

  • It can show the address visible to its lookup request. Compare that result before and after changing a VPN or proxy route.
  • It can reveal disagreement among data providers. Differences in location are a reason to treat geolocation as approximate, not a basis for declaring one provider definitively right.
  • It can run specific browser and DNS checks. Interpret them as diagnostics within their stated scope, not a complete evaluation of a VPN or the device’s entire traffic path.
  • It offers several ways to access results. A browser view suits visual inspection; terminal output can fit into scripts or troubleshooting workflows.

My-IP-Info’s useful contribution is bringing those checks into one open-source project, rather than turning one IP result into a sweeping claim about a connection. The author’s article and project documentation explain its features, but they do not establish an independent security assessment, a provider-accuracy ranking, or a benchmark.
