Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Image tinting with a blend mode is a per-pixel calculation: a source color or layer is combined with the image beneath it, called the backdrop. The selected mode determines how each pair of channel values produces a result. Multiply usually darkens; screen usually lightens. In web code, choose mix-blend-mode to blend an element with content behind it, background-blend-mode to blend an element’s background layers, or SVG feBlend when you want explicit filter inputs.
What a blend mode does to an image
A blend mode is a rule for combining the foreground (source) color with the background (backdrop) color at each pixel. The result depends on both inputs; a mode is not simply a preset that lays the same flat color over every pixel. As MDN explains, the calculation produces a new color value for each pixel in the layers to which the mode applies.

For a tint, the source is often a solid color layer, while the backdrop is the original image. Because the blend calculation uses the backdrop’s values, tonal detail can remain visible, but the result varies with the chosen mode and with the source color’s opacity.
How multiply and screen change pixel values
For one normalized color channel, let Cb be the backdrop value and Cs the source value. Both are between 0 and 1. With fully opaque inputs, multiply and screen are:

const multiply = (Cb, Cs) => Cb * Cs;
const screen = (Cb, Cs) => Cb + Cs - Cb * Cs;
Apply the function independently to red, green, and blue to calculate an RGB pixel. For 8-bit channel values, divide each input by 255 before applying the formula, then multiply the result by 255 and round to return to the 0–255 range.
- Multiply darkens: black makes the result black, while white leaves the other channel unchanged. It is useful for a colored overlay that should preserve some of the image’s tonal variation.
- Screen lightens: black leaves the other channel unchanged, while white makes the result white. It is the lightening counterpart to multiply.
- Overlay uses a multiply-like calculation for darker backdrop values and a screen-like calculation for lighter ones.
- Darken and lighten select the darker or lighter channel result, respectively.
- Normal uses the top color regardless of the bottom color; with an opaque source it replaces the backdrop, while transparency lets the backdrop show through.
These behaviors are described in MDN’s blend-mode reference. There is no universally correct tint mode: choose for the visual behavior you want, then inspect the result with representative light, dark, and transparent pixels.

Why the short code is not a complete alpha compositor
The JavaScript functions above assume fully opaque inputs. They show the channel math for that case, not a complete replacement for a browser or SVG compositing pipeline. When either input is partly transparent, the output must account for both input opacities and how the colors are represented.

The W3C SVG 1.1 filter specification gives alpha-aware equations using premultiplied colors. For multiply, it defines cr = (1-qa)*cb + (1-qb)*ca + ca*cb; for screen, cr = cb + ca - ca*cb. The result opacity is qr = 1 - (1-qa)*(1-qb). Here, qa and qb are the input opacities, and ca and cb are their premultiplied colors. The simpler channel formulas are the opaque special case.

Choose the web API by the layers you want to blend
Blend an element with content behind it using mix-blend-mode
Use this CSS property when the element itself should blend with its backdrop. The relevant backdrop is within the same stacking context. If blending should be constrained to a particular group, MDN demonstrates using isolation: isolate on a containing element.
.image-frame {
isolation: isolate;
}
.image-frame img {
display: block;
}
.image-frame .tint {
mix-blend-mode: multiply;
}
In this example, the tint element blends with the image only if the two are layered together in the same stacking context. The property does not mean “blend this image’s background layers”; it blends the element with the content behind it. See MDN’s mix-blend-mode reference for the backdrop and isolation details.

Blend an element’s background layers using background-blend-mode
Use background-blend-mode when the layers to combine are the element’s own backgrounds, such as a background image and a background color. It does not target the element’s content against the page backdrop. The available blend-mode values are described in MDN’s blend-mode reference.

Use SVG’s feBlend when building a filter pipeline with explicit inputs such as the source graphic and another filter result. The W3C SVG 1.1 specification lists normal, multiply, screen, darken, and lighten. It states that the normal blend mode is equivalent to the over operator on the feComposite filter primitive.

Why code can differ between CSS, SVG, and image libraries
The word “multiply” does not by itself establish which pixels an API blends, how it handles alpha, or every color-space detail. CSS properties operate in different rendering contexts, SVG filters use explicit filter inputs and defined compositing equations, and native image libraries expose their own source and destination conventions.
For example, Apple’s vImage blend-mode documentation describes separate functions and identifies multiply as the product of corresponding source pixels. When translating an algorithm between APIs, compare the layer inputs, alpha handling, supported modes, rendering context, and how transparent, dark, and light pixels behave. Do not assume that matching mode names alone guarantee identical output.
How to pick and verify a tint
- Identify the inputs. Decide whether the tint is a separate element over an image, one of an element’s background layers, or an input in an SVG filter.
- Choose a visual behavior. Try multiply when the tint should generally darken while retaining tonal variation; try screen when it should generally lighten. Consider overlay when you want different behavior for darker and lighter backdrop values.
- Check alpha separately. Test the source color or layer at the opacity you intend to use. A formula demonstrated for opaque channels does not describe every partially transparent result.
- Test representative pixels and context. Inspect dark, light, and transparent areas in the actual layout or filter pipeline. For CSS, verify which stacking context supplies the backdrop.
- Confirm the target environment. Blend-mode values are broadly available in CSS according to MDN, but that does not establish a complete browser-by-browser compatibility guarantee for every implementation detail. Check a current compatibility reference for a specific browser or platform requirement.
These checks follow from the documented differences between modes and APIs; the right choice depends on the image, tint, opacity, and rendering context.
