What Is Microsegmentation in Cybersecurity, and How Does It Contain Ransomware?

Microsegmentation restricts communication between smaller groups of systems, making ransomware lateral movement harder—but it works only as part of a layered security and response program.

Microsegmentation divides an IT environment into smaller groups of resources and limits which connections are allowed between them. If ransomware compromises one device or workload, those rules can restrict its routes to other systems, making lateral movement harder and potentially limiting the damage. It is a containment layer—not a guarantee against infection or a replacement for identity security, monitoring, backups, or incident response.

What microsegmentation means

Traditional network segmentation separates broad areas of a network, such as departments or office locations. Microsegmentation applies boundaries and access rules at a finer level: smaller groups of devices, applications, workloads, or other resources. The precise implementation varies by environment and enforcement point.

In its July 29, 2025 announcement of Part One of its zero-trust microsegmentation guidance, CISA describes the approach as reducing attack surface, limiting lateral movement, and improving visibility for monitoring smaller, isolated resource groups. CISA places microsegmentation within zero-trust architecture, where access is not assumed to be safe merely because a resource is on an internal network. CISA’s announcement describes Part One as high-level planning guidance.

How does microsegmentation contain ransomware?

Ransomware incidents can involve more than the first compromised device. An intruder may try to reach additional systems, obtain credentials, or access valuable data before deploying encryption or stealing information. On a flat or overly permissive network, a compromised resource may have many routes to other systems.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

Microsegmentation reduces those routes by allowing only the communication that a resource or group needs. If an infected workload tries to contact a system outside its permitted boundary, the policy may block that connection or generate an event for investigation. Fewer permitted pathways can make lateral movement more difficult and constrain how far an intrusion can travel.

CISA and MS-ISAC state in the #StopRansomware Guide that network segmentation can help contain an intrusion’s impact and prevent or limit malicious actors’ lateral movement. A 2021 CISA, FBI, and NSA advisory on BlackMatter ransomware likewise recommends controlling traffic between subnetworks and watching for abnormal traffic and lateral connections. That advisory addresses a particular ransomware family, but the segmentation and monitoring principles apply more broadly. Read the BlackMatter advisory.

What microsegmentation cannot guarantee

Microsegmentation does not remove ransomware already on a device, ensure that every attack path is blocked, or guarantee that an incident will stay inside one segment. A permitted connection, stolen privileged identity, misconfiguration, shared management system, or human action can undermine the intended boundary. CISA warns that segmentation may be rendered ineffective through user error or failure to follow organizational policies.

Nor does network location alone establish that a user or workload should be trusted. Segmentation works best as one part of a broader zero-trust and ransomware-readiness program, alongside least-privilege identity controls, multifactor authentication, secure administration, endpoint and network monitoring, protected backups, and tested response plans. Which controls are appropriate depends on the organization’s systems and risk.

Plan boundaries around real dependencies

A useful policy must protect systems without breaking legitimate work. Start by identifying resources, necessary communications, and dependencies; do not assume that systems belong together simply because they share a subnet or business label. CISA’s guidance spans on-premises, cloud, hybrid, IT, operational technology (OT), industrial control systems (ICS), and Internet of Things (IoT) environments.

  • Map the environment: Maintain diagrams of systems, data flows, connections, dependencies, and third-party access. Outdated or incomplete diagrams can leave overlooked routes or cause teams to block essential traffic.
  • Define boundaries by need: Consider separating business units and departmental IT resources, and preserve separation between IT and OT where appropriate. Permit required flows rather than relying on broad default access.
  • Account for operations: Identify who owns policies and exceptions, how dependencies will be discovered, and how changes will be reviewed. Test rules carefully to reduce the risk of interrupting business services.
  • Include visibility and response: Plan how teams will review flow records, policy events, and unusual connections, and how they can isolate affected resources if an incident occurs.
  • Coordinate incident actions: During a suspected ransomware incident, coordinate isolation decisions. CISA warns that poorly coordinated actions can give attackers an opportunity to move laterally or deploy ransomware more widely before containment. Use out-of-band communications where appropriate if affected systems or channels may be unreliable.

How to evaluate an implementation approach

There is no universally best enforcement point or product established by the cited guidance. Compare approaches against the organization’s environment and operating model rather than treating “microsegmentation” as a single product category.

Evaluation area Questions to ask
Enforcement point and granularity Are policies enforced at network, host, workload, or other points? Can boundaries be as specific as the resources and connections that need protection?
Environment coverage Does the approach fit the organization’s on-premises, cloud, hybrid, OT/ICS, or IoT systems and their operational constraints?
Policy operations How will teams discover dependencies, define allowed flows, review exceptions, and avoid disrupting legitimate services?
Visibility and response Are flow records and policy events available to monitoring teams? Can responders isolate affected resources in a coordinated way?
Identity and zero-trust integration Can access decisions account for identity and context instead of relying on network location alone?
Existing infrastructure and ownership What integration effort is required, who will operate the policies, and can existing controls meet the goal?

NIST’s SP 1800-35, Implementing a Zero Trust Architecture, documents 19 example zero-trust implementations developed with 24 collaborators using commercially available technology. These are implementation examples, not measurements of ransomware-prevention effectiveness or evidence that one approach is best for every organization.

Use microsegmentation as one layer of ransomware readiness

Microsegmentation can reduce the paths available to an intruder and help limit an incident’s blast area, but its value depends on accurate policies, maintained visibility, and coordinated operations. Pair it with controls that reduce the chance of compromise, detect suspicious activity, preserve recoverable data, and guide response. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide covers segmentation alongside broader ransomware preparation and response practices.

For current implementation context, NIST’s 2025 zero-trust architecture publication provides examples across on-premises and multiple cloud environments. NIST also announced a broader ransomware risk profile aligned with CSF 2.0 in June 2026; that resource addresses ransomware risk generally, not microsegmentation-specific effectiveness. See NIST’s announcement.
