Steam and wet-dry washing are different cleaning methods, even though some models combine them. For a car, garage, or workshop, look instead at a cordless shop wet-dry vacuum: it is a different appliance from an upright floor washer.
What is the difference between steam and wet-dry cleaning?
Steam describes a cleaning method: the machine heats water and applies vapour. A wet-dry floor washer applies water, agitates dirt with a roller or similar tool, and collects the resulting dirty liquid along with dry debris. Dyson’s UK explainer, published August 17, 2026, says that “Wet/dry vacuums do not typically use steam.” That is a description of the usual category, not a rule that excludes every steam-enabled model. The terms can overlap in a specific product. Dreame’s comparison page lists Aero Pro Steam among its wet-dry models and identifies steam cleaning as a feature. That makes it a model-specific combination—not evidence that all wet-dry cleaners make steam. Dreame’s wet-dry vacuum comparison.

What to compare in a floor washer
Floor compatibility comes first
Do not assume a wet-dry washer or steam cleaner is safe for every hard floor. Suitable surfaces depend on the particular product and finish. Match runtime and tanks to your cleaning routine
Runtime is a manufacturer-advertised, model-specific figure, not a category-wide guarantee. Dreame’s US collection advertises up to 60 minutes for select cordless models, including Aero Pro, and 35 minutes for Aero. Those figures are manufacturer claims; check the current listing for the selected model and cleaning mode, then judge whether its runtime suits the area you clean. Check clean- and dirty-water tank capacity for the exact model, too. Larger tanks may mean fewer interruptions, while all-in-one wet cleaning still involves handling collected dirty water and cleaning the machine after use. Compare roller, tank, and dock cleaning or drying steps, along with weight and reach under furniture where the manufacturer provides those details.

Compare like with like
A steam-capable floor washer should be compared with other floor washers on its actual cleaning functions and care requirements—not with a shop vacuum based on a shared “wet-dry” label. Dreame’s official comparison, accessed October 13, 2026, gives model-specific examples including 30 kPa suction, 900 ml clean-water capacity, 600 ml used-water capacity, a 392°F steam specification, and up to 100 minutes’ maximum runtime for a listed model. These values belong to that comparison’s particular model row; they are not typical specifications for the category. Confirm the current model row and regional product listing before relying on them.

When a cordless shop vacuum is the better choice

For this form factor, compare battery compatibility, capacity, and included attachments. If you already own batteries in a compatible platform, that may shape the choice. Do not use a floor washer’s runtime or floor-washing features to predict shop-vac performance; they serve different jobs.

- Decide whether you need a floor-washing upright, a steam feature, or a portable shop vacuum.
- Check the current manual for the exact model’s permitted surfaces and cleaning method.
- For a floor washer, compare advertised runtime with your floor area and the mode you expect to use.
