It can show a fully virtual world, or it can use its cameras to show your room and place digital content over it. “Standalone” means it is an all-in-one device that does not need a PC or console. Meta’s comparison also lists PC VR support through Meta Quest Link, by cable or Air Link over Wi-Fi.
What Quest 3 does
Quest 3 is part of Meta’s Quest line, and Meta Horizon OS powers Quest devices. It does two related things.

Mixed reality
Meta’s developer documentation defines mixed reality as blending virtual objects with the user’s physical environment, so that experiences can respond to and integrate with the real world. Virtual content and the physical space coexist. A virtual object can, for example, appear to sit in your actual room.

How passthrough and the depth sensor make mixed reality work
Passthrough is the camera-based view of your surroundings inside the headset. Meta says the stereo cameras capture the environment in real time, and an app then renders virtual content over that feed.
Meta’s current documentation describes Quest 3 passthrough as full color with depth estimation. Quest 3 also has a dedicated depth sensor. Depth information can let real objects appear in front of virtual ones, which makes blended scenes more convincing.

Quest 3 versus Quest 3S
The two are related but distinct models. Meta’s comparison lists the same chipset (XR2 Gen 2), 8 GB of memory, LCD displays, a 120 Hz maximum refresh rate, head and hand tracking, and color passthrough for both. The differences are below.

Battery figures are Meta’s estimates. Current prices vary by seller and region, so check a live listing rather than relying on launch figures. A higher model number does not make Quest 3 the newest Quest device. The comparison above establishes only how it relates to Quest 3S.
