Amazon lists many Echo models as Matter-compatible, but only a smaller group also acts as a Thread Border Router. If you’re choosing an Echo for a Matter device, check both lists—and whether the device connects over Wi-Fi or Thread.
What is Matter?
Matter is an open, IP-based smart-home protocol developed to improve interoperability between products and platforms. As the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) explains, “Matter is a new, open smart home protocol that uses existing, familiar technologies, including Bluetooth Low Energy for device setup and Wi-Fi, Thread, and Ethernet for connecting devices.” CSA Matter FAQ

Bluetooth Low Energy helps commission a device—essentially, get it onto the network. Once set up, a Matter product communicates using a supported network connection such as Wi-Fi, Thread, or Ethernet. Matter does not replace Alexa or a device maker’s app; it gives compatible products and platforms a common way to communicate.
Using a device with more than one platform
Matter’s multi-admin feature lets users share a compatible device with multiple platforms or apps. For example, a device can be set up with one ecosystem and then shared with another, subject to the device and platform’s capabilities. Matter bridges can also make devices using protocols such as Zigbee or Z-Wave available to a Matter ecosystem. Bridging does not turn those products into native Matter devices.

Matter version and feature support
The CSA announced Matter 1.6 on June 17, 2026, with updates focused on setup, coordination among ecosystems, and how devices interpret control inputs. Amazon’s Echo documentation says compatible Echo devices support the Matter 1.5 SDK and a subset of Matter 1.5 device types. That does not mean every listed Echo supports every feature in the latest Matter release. CSA announcement of Matter 1.6 · Amazon Matter support

How to add a Matter device to Alexa
Amazon documents setup through the Alexa app. Other onboarding routes are possible: the CSA says setup may begin in a device maker’s app, and Matter multi-admin allows compatible devices to be shared with additional platforms.
- Confirm whether the smart-home product uses Matter over Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread. For Thread, make sure a compatible Thread-enabled Alexa device is online.
- Open the Alexa app and go to Devices > Add Device > Matter.
- Scan the product’s Matter QR code or enter its pairing code, then follow the app’s instructions.
- Keep the device within Amazon’s recommended range of 30 feet (9 meters) from a compatible Alexa hub or device during setup.
See Amazon’s Matter setup instructions and the CSA Matter FAQ.
How to choose an Echo for a Matter device
- Check Matter support: Match the exact Echo generation or release year to Amazon’s Matter list.
- Check the device’s connection type: Matter over Wi-Fi does not require a Thread Border Router; Matter over Thread does.
- Check Thread separately: If the device uses Thread, confirm that your exact Echo appears on Amazon’s Thread list and note the listed Thread version.
- Check the needed features: Confirm that Alexa supports the device category and the particular capabilities you intend to use.
An Echo on Amazon’s Matter list is not automatically a Thread Border Router. Check the Echo you already own against both official lists before deciding whether you need different hardware.
What Amazon’s historical Matter count means
In a May 2, 2023 post, Amazon said more than 100 million Matter-enabled Echo devices across 20 models could be updated to support Matter at that time. That is a dated historical statement, not a current device count. Amazon’s May 2, 2023 statement
