Materials engineering has a broad focus on material properties, processing and applications; mineral processing engineering concentrates on separating valuable minerals from ore and preparing them for further processing. The disciplines overlap in areas such as materials science, metallurgy and extractive processing, but degree names and curricula vary by university.
Students typically combine mathematics and foundational sciences with mineralogy, processing operations, laboratory work and engineering design. Graduates may pursue roles in mineral-processing plants, metallurgy, process control, consulting, research or related fields, depending on their training and local opportunities.

What does the field cover?
Mineral processing engineers work with ore: a naturally occurring material containing minerals of potential value alongside less valuable material. They characterize the feed, choose and operate methods to separate or concentrate its useful components, and help prepare the resulting materials for subsequent treatment or use. The goal is not simply to maximize recovery; process choices also have to account for product quality, operating constraints, safety, cost and environmental effects.

Typical operations include sampling, particle sizing, crushing and grinding (comminution), screening, classification, gravity separation, dense-medium separation and froth flotation. Some programs also cover aqueous processing, extractive metallurgy, recycling and process control. The exact scope depends on the institution and degree.

For example, Penn State’s 2026–27 undergraduate bulletin describes MNPR 301 as covering sampling, sizing, comminution, physical and chemical processes, industrial applications and pollution control. Its MNPR 401 description includes comminution, screening, classification, slurry pumping, thickening and filtration, with applications to plant design. These are examples of individual courses, not a universal curriculum.
What courses might you take?
Programs commonly build from mathematics, chemistry, physics and engineering fundamentals toward mineralogy, mineral characterization, sampling, particle-size analysis, separation methods and process design. Laboratory and practical work can be important because students need to connect measurements of real materials with how a process performs. Depending on the program, advanced study may include hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, recycling or process control.

Examples from university and professional curricula
- University of Pretoria: Its 2024 NMP 310 module covers liberation analysis, particle sizing, comminution, screening and classification, gravity and dense-medium concentration, and flotation. The module lists three lectures and four practical sessions per week; that workload figure applies to NMP 310 only.
- Penn State: Its 2026–27 bulletin provides examples spanning sampling, size reduction, physical and chemical processing, slurry handling, thickening, filtration and plant design.
- Pakistan Engineering Council: Its 2024 curriculum includes mineral classification and identification, comminution, ore sampling, particle-size analysis, gravity, electrostatic and magnetic separation, froth flotation, selective flocculation, leaching and agglomeration. It emphasizes comparing and selecting suitable processing techniques.
When comparing programs, look beyond the degree title. Review the required math and science, laboratory and design components, processes covered, attention to safety and the environment, industry or internship exposure, accreditation and stated graduate outcomes. A similarly named degree elsewhere may have a different balance of subjects.

What skills are useful?
A strong foundation in mathematics, chemistry, physics and mineralogy helps engineers understand both the material being processed and the behavior of a plant. Students also benefit from learning to interpret measurements and process data rather than treating equipment choices as isolated decisions.
- Technical practice: Sampling, size reduction, screening, classification and separation, alongside evaluating process performance.
- Engineering judgment: Problem-solving, process design and optimization, and weighing operating, economic, environmental and safety constraints.
- Professional practice: Teamwork, clear communication and ethical judgment when working across technical and operational groups.
UBC’s mining-engineering career guidance also identifies material handling, mine management, sustainable facility design and operation, and production-performance analysis. These are related skills from mining engineering guidance, not a checklist that every materials or mineral-processing graduate must meet.
What careers can the degree lead to?
Published university program pages describe several possible paths in mining and minerals processing, metallurgical plants, engineering and consulting, environmental and sustainability work, research, government and academia. These are examples of potential fields, not promises of employment. Job titles and duties differ between employers and regions.
Rank #4
| Career path | Typical work focus |
|---|---|
| Mineral process engineer | Designing, operating or improving mineral-processing plant operations. |
| Metallurgist or extraction specialist | Focusing on extraction and refining; specializations may include hydrometallurgy or pyrometallurgy. |
| Process-control specialist | Monitoring and optimizing process operations. |
| Process mineralogist | Connecting ore properties and mineral characteristics with process performance. |
| Consultant | Supporting clients across engineering or processing projects. |
Curtin University lists these and related specialist roles among possible outcomes for its Mineral Process Engineering major. Papua New Guinea University of Technology names mining and minerals-processing companies, metallurgical plants, engineering and consulting firms, environmental and sustainability roles, research and development, government, and academia as possible employment areas. Neither page establishes a salary range or job-growth outlook.

Program duration is also institution-specific: Papua New Guinea University of Technology describes its cited bachelor’s program as four years full-time. That should not be taken as a standard duration for every degree in this field.

How to decide whether the field fits you
This area may suit you if you enjoy applying science to practical problems, working with measurements and process data, and considering how technical decisions affect plant performance and the surrounding environment. Compare actual course plans and graduate outcomes at the universities you are considering, and check accreditation and work-experience options directly with each institution.
Curtin University describes its course aim as preparing students to “design, develop, optimise and manage mineral processing plants.” The wording reflects the applied character of the discipline, while the precise content and career options depend on the program.
