1. Find the return terms for the exact item
Do not assume that a store treats every product the same way. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission advises shoppers that sellers often have different refund and return policies for sale items, especially clearance merchandise (FTC: Online Shopping).

Look for the final-sale notice on the product page, then check the cart or checkout for any additional terms. Save a copy or screenshot. Confirm whether the item can be returned at all and, if so, what remedy is offered: a refund, exchange, or store credit. Check the deadline, return-postage responsibility, and any fees. Terms may depend on the item and the market to which it is shipped.

2. Check whether the fit information is good enough
A size label alone cannot tell you how a particular garment will fit. Use the chart and measurements for the exact product, and check whether measurements describe the body or the garment itself. Compare them with a similar item you own that fits well. Pay attention to the listed cut, fabric, and any notes about stretch or fit.
GU’s U.S. measurement guide says fit may vary by 0.5 to 1.15 inches (0.5 to 1.18 inches for a belt), depending on product and fabric, and directs shoppers to item-specific measurements (GU US: How to Measure). This is GU’s own guidance, not a general apparel-industry statistic. If the listing lacks measurements you need, ask the seller in writing—or decide whether the uncertainty is acceptable before paying.

3. Read the full listing and inspect the condition
Read beyond the headline and promotional copy. Check the description and images for fabric, care instructions, color, included components, and any disclosed flaw or condition note. Confirm that the listing describes the exact item and variant you intend to order. Words such as “close-out” and other sale labels may be accompanied by specific terms, so read the fine print rather than inferring what they mean (FTC: Online Shopping; FTC: Buying From an Online Marketplace).
4. Work out the total cost and delivery terms
Compare the amount you will actually pay, not just the advertised price. Add shipping, handling, taxes, and any other disclosed fees. Check the promised delivery timing and who is responsible for shipping the order. In the United States, FTC guidance says sellers must ship as promised and describes a 30-day default when no shipping time is given; consult the agency’s current guidance for details rather than treating that summary as a rule for every country or transaction (FTC: Online Shopping).

5. Check the seller, marketplace, and payment protections
On a marketplace, identify who is actually selling the garment. The platform’s dispute process may be separate from the seller’s return policy, and some marketplaces leave returns and refunds to buyers and sellers. Find out whether the platform’s protection covers this seller and item, what situations qualify, and the deadline to file. Keep messages with the seller. The FTC recommends checking marketplace policies before buying (FTC: Buying From an Online Marketplace).
Use a payment method with a dispute process when possible. The FTC says credit cards offer strong protections and notes that protections differ between credit and debit cards; a dispute or chargeback is not guaranteed to succeed (FTC: Shopping online? Here’s what to do when things go wrong; FTC: What To Do if You’re Billed for Things You Never Got, or You Get Unordered Products).

6. Keep a record before placing the order
Save the product page, the return policy, checkout disclosures, receipt, order confirmation, and relevant correspondence. If the item is misdescribed, does not arrive, or another issue arises, these records can help explain what was offered and what you purchased. Act promptly: return windows, marketplace claims, and payment disputes can have deadlines.
What “final sale” means for legal rights
“Final sale” commonly signals restrictive voluntary return terms, but a store policy and statutory rights are not the same thing. The rules depend on where you live, the transaction, the seller, and what happened. For example, the European Commission describes a 14-day withdrawal period for covered online consumer purchases in the EU (European Commission: Protecting you when buying online). That regional right should not be generalized to other countries or every transaction. For a particular dispute, check the current rules that apply in your location.
