macOS Big Sur is Apple’s macOS 11 operating system for Mac computers. Apple released it as a free update on November 12, 2020, with a redesigned interface, updated built-in apps, and support for the transition to Apple-silicon Macs.
What does “macOS Big Sur” mean?
Big Sur is the name of a major version of macOS, the operating system that runs Mac computers. It is not a Mac model or a separate app: “macOS Big Sur” refers to macOS version 11. Apple announced the release in June 2020 and made it generally available on November 12, 2020, as a free software update. Apple’s release announcement

Support for Apple-silicon Macs
Big Sur was engineered for Macs with Apple’s M1 chip, which marked the start of the transition from Intel processors. Apple said Universal apps could support both Intel and Apple-silicon Macs; Rosetta 2 lets existing Intel apps that have not been updated to Universal run on Apple-silicon Macs. App compatibility can vary, so confirm requirements for the software you rely on. Apple’s Big Sur announcement
Which Macs can run Big Sur?
Compatibility depends on the exact Mac model. Apple’s overview lists, among other families, MacBook Air models from 2013 onward, MacBook Pro models from late 2013 onward, Mac mini from 2014 onward, and iMac from 2014 onward. These family-level cutoffs are not a substitute for checking the precise model: consult Apple’s Big Sur compatibility information before installing.

How do you check whether Big Sur is installed?
- On your Mac, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac.
- Read the macOS name and version shown in the window. For Apple’s instructions and its version list, see Find out which macOS your Mac is using.
Apple’s version table listed macOS Big Sur 11.7.11 when checked on October 4, 2026. That is a dated version status, not a guarantee that the table will remain unchanged.

No. Big Sur is an older major macOS release, rather than the current macOS generation. Whether it is suitable for a particular Mac depends on exact-model compatibility, whether essential apps and peripherals work with it, and whether it meets the user’s security and support needs. Apple’s compatibility page and version table are useful checks, but the information cited here does not establish a complete security-support comparison among macOS releases.
