LTPO is a display backplane technology that can help an OLED screen change its refresh rate to suit what you are viewing. It can refresh quickly for motion and more slowly for relatively static content, potentially reducing display power. The exact refresh rates and battery impact depend on the device; the LTPO label alone does not guarantee a particular range or battery-life improvement.
What is an LTPO display?
LTPO stands for low-temperature polycrystalline oxide. It describes a hybrid thin-film transistor (TFT) backplane: the circuitry behind a display’s pixels. In an OLED screen, that backplane controls the electrical operation of the emissive pixels; it is separate from the OLED emission layer. Samsung Display explains the backplane’s role in its overview of backplane technology.

A technical review describes LTPO as combining low-temperature polycrystalline silicon and oxide semiconductor TFTs. The hybrid is intended to draw on useful properties of both types and can support pixel circuits designed to operate at both low and high frame rates. It is an enabling panel technology, not a refresh-rate setting or a promise that every LTPO device behaves the same way. The review also notes integration and processing challenges. Chinese Journal of Liquid Crystals and Displays, 2020.
How does LTPO work?
A refresh rate is how often a display updates its image, measured in hertz (Hz). A variable-refresh display can change that rate according to content or operating conditions: fast-moving scenes may benefit from frequent updates, while a still image usually does not need them. Samsung Display gives examples of 120Hz for games, 60Hz for movies, 30Hz for email and 10Hz for still images in its explanation of variable refresh rate.

LTPO helps make a broad range of refresh behavior possible through its backplane and pixel-circuit design. Device software then manages when the screen uses a higher or lower rate. That division matters: the hardware enables the range, but system policy, settings, conditions and app behavior influence what rate is actually used.
What are the benefits of LTPO?
Potentially lower display power
When content is relatively static, refreshing less often can reduce the display’s operating power compared with continuing to refresh at a high fixed rate. Samsung Display’s 2020 announcement reported up to 22% lower display operating power than existing smartphones in general use, and 60% lower operating power while displaying still images at 10Hz compared with conventional fixed-frequency panels. These are manufacturer-reported display-power comparisons, not independent results or promises of an equivalent improvement in total phone battery life. The figures apply to the comparisons described in Samsung Display’s 2020 announcement.

Smoother motion when it is useful
A panel can use a higher refresh rate for content with fast movement and a lower rate for content that changes little. That can balance motion smoothness and display power more efficiently than using one high fixed rate all the time. Samsung Display’s Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G example supported 10Hz, 30Hz, 60Hz and 120Hz scenarios; it is a historical example, not a specification to assume for other phones.

- Actual behavior varies by device. LTPO does not establish a phone’s minimum or maximum refresh rate. Manufacturers may implement different ranges and system policies.
- Apps do not always control the rate. Apple’s developer documentation says the system mediates the actual refresh rate on ProMotion displays rather than allowing an app to force a particular rate. It also warns that higher refresh rates can consume significantly more power. See Apple’s ProMotion guidance for app developers.
- Power savings depend on use. The screen may spend little time at low refresh rates during fast-moving content, and display power is only one part of a phone’s total energy use. A panel-power claim cannot be applied directly to whole-device battery life.
- Manufacturing involves added complexity. LTPO’s hybrid integration has process challenges, but the cited technical review does not establish a universal retail-price premium, defect rate or durability penalty.
How to compare LTPO phones
Compare the exact model and variant, not just a family name or the LTPO label. Useful details include the advertised and supported refresh-rate range, the minimum rate available in the mode you plan to use, and whether adaptive refresh is automatic or affected by settings. Also consider whether the apps and content you care about allow the display to use low or high rates.

For battery comparisons, look for device-level tests conducted under comparable content, brightness and settings. Keep those results separate from manufacturer claims about panel operating power. Specifications and behavior can differ by model, region and variant, so verify the exact device rather than inferring its capabilities from another phone in the same lineup.
