There is no single best VPN for everyone who browses the web. Choose based on how much weight you place on privacy evidence, whether you need to cover the whole device or only a browser, and the price you will pay when the introductory term ends. A VPN encrypts traffic between your device and a VPN endpoint and changes the IP address websites see, but it shifts trust to the VPN provider rather than making you anonymous.
What a VPN does—and what it does not
A VPN routes your connection through a provider’s server, encrypting traffic between your device and that endpoint while masking your usual public IP address from websites. This can change the network information visible to sites and network operators, but the provider becomes an important party in the connection: it may be able to observe some information about your traffic, depending on the service and setup. Read the provider’s privacy policy and examine the evidence behind its claims, rather than treating “no logs” as a guarantee. TechRadar’s VPN overview explains the basic function; Tom’s Guide’s comparison discusses what a no-logs policy means and the possible scope of audits.

A VPN does not guarantee anonymity, prevent a logged-in website from recognizing your account, or replace device security. Those are different privacy and security concerns; a VPN changes the network path, not every way a person can be identified or a device compromised.

Privacy policy, audit scope, and provider history
Check what account and connection data a provider collects, how it describes retention, who owns the service, and what jurisdiction applies. Then look for independent audits and read what the auditor actually examined: an audit may cover policies, infrastructure, apps, or only part of a service. The word “audited” alone does not establish that every claim or component was reviewed.

RTINGS’ privacy-focused comparison gives particular weight to data handling, ownership, jurisdiction, audit quality, and provider history. It highlights Mullvad and Windscribe and also discusses caveats for Proton VPN. In RTINGS’ assessment, Proton VPN’s last reviewed privacy audit had limited scope: the broader privacy policies were excluded, and auditors did not access the VPN software source code. RTINGS also notes caveats involving some account data and the free plan. These are RTINGS’ findings about the materials it reviewed, not a blanket verdict on every plan or future audit.
Leak protection, kill switch, and platform behavior
Look beyond a feature list. A kill switch is intended to block traffic if the VPN connection drops; leak checks examine whether the apparent IP address or DNS requests escape the tunnel. Verify how these protections work on the operating system and app version you will use. Security.org says its 2026 VPN testing includes IP and DNS leak checks, kill-switch behavior, protocol review, privacy policies, audits, speed, and subscription costs. Its findings are tied to its reviewed providers and test conditions; performance and behavior can vary by platform, server, location, and configuration.

Speed and everyday usability
Speed depends on factors such as the server distance, network conditions, and device. Security.org reports running ten speed tests per VPN, averaging download, upload, and latency results for nearby and distant servers against a baseline. That is the reviewer’s methodology, not an independent certification or a promise of the same results on your connection. Consider whether the app makes it easy to select a server, reconnect, and manage the protections you need without disrupting ordinary browsing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShortlist options by the kind of browsing you do
Published rankings answer different questions. Security.org’s 2026 tested list includes NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, Private Internet Access, and Hotspot Shield, using a broad set of criteria. RTINGS places more emphasis on privacy and data handling, highlighting Mullvad and Windscribe while examining Proton VPN’s audit and policy limitations. Neither ranking determines the right choice for every reader.

Browser extension or full VPN app?
A Chrome VPN extension may work as a proxy for browser traffic, according to Security.org’s explanation of browser VPNs. That can be convenient if your goal is limited to activity in the browser, but it should not be assumed to route traffic from other apps on the device. A full VPN app is the more relevant option when you want whole-device coverage and app-level protections such as a kill switch.
- Choose an extension if browser-only coverage is sufficient and you have confirmed what the extension routes.
- Choose a full app if you need to cover other apps or want the VPN’s broader device-level controls.
- Check the exact platform because features and coverage can differ between browser extensions, desktop apps, and mobile apps.

| Provider | One-month plan | Longer-term price listed |
|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | $9.99 for one month | $2.99/month equivalent on a two-year plan |
| NordVPN | $14.99 for one month | $3.49/month equivalent on a 27-month plan |
Tom’s Guide flags renewal price increases for longer commitments. Before paying, check the provider’s checkout page for the full amount due, currency, billing interval, renewal price, refund policy, and length of any promotional term. A low monthly equivalent can require a larger upfront payment and a longer commitment than month-to-month billing.

A practical decision checklist
- Decide what you need to cover. Choose browser-only coverage or whole-device coverage based on which apps and devices you want routed through the VPN.
- Read the current privacy policy. Look for collected account and connection data, retention terms, ownership, and jurisdiction.
- Inspect audit details. Find the report date, scope, findings, and any components or policies excluded from review.
- Check protections on your platform. Confirm kill-switch behavior and leak protection for the app and operating system you plan to use.
- Compare price and renewal terms. Use the final checkout total and renewal amount, not just an advertised monthly equivalent.
- Use rankings as shortlists, not verdicts. Review methods differ, so weigh the criteria that match your privacy needs, convenience, and budget.
