What Is Live Captioning for YouTube Live Streams?

YouTube Live offers automatic captions for some eligible English streams at normal latency, while creators can also supply captions through compatible encoders or software.

Live captioning displays spoken words as text while a YouTube livestream is playing. You can use YouTube’s automatic captions if the feature is available for your channel, or supply captions through a compatible encoder or captioning workflow. YouTube’s documented automatic option is English-only, requires normal latency and must be enabled for each stream; it is not available to every channel.

How YouTube Live captions work

Closed captions are the visual display of a program’s audio. For a livestream, the text can be generated by YouTube from the stream’s audio or supplied by the creator through supported caption technology. These are different workflows: automatic captions depend on YouTube’s feature availability and speech recognition, while supplied captions require compatible equipment or software and advance setup.

Option 1: Turn on YouTube’s automatic live captions

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Go live and select Stream.
  2. In the stream settings, turn on Closed captions.
  3. Choose Automatic captions as the caption source and select the video language.
  4. Use normal latency, then check the Live Control Room preview to confirm captions appear before relying on them for the event.

YouTube documents this option for English-language streams at normal latency, enabled per individual stream rather than channel-wide. Availability is being rolled out gradually. YouTube’s Help troubleshooting guidance mentions channels with more than 1,000 subscribers, but that is not a guarantee of eligibility; check the controls in your own Live Control Room because rollout and interface availability can change. See YouTube’s live caption instructions.

When automatic captions may not appear or may be poor

  • The feature is not yet available to your channel.
  • The stream uses low or ultra-low latency rather than normal latency.
  • The spoken language is unsupported by the documented live workflow.
  • Audio is poor or speech is difficult for the system to recognize.
  • Speakers talk over one another, or multiple languages are spoken at once.

Automatic captions are not a substitute for checking that the words are correct. YouTube encourages professional captions, particularly when accuracy is important.

Option 2: Supply captions through an encoder or captioning software

YouTube describes two professional delivery routes: captions embedded in the video using EIA 608/CEA 708, or a caption feed sent by supported software to a signed HTTP ingestion URL. The exact setup depends on the route and the tools used.

Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions

  1. In the stream setup, turn on Closed captions and choose Embedded 608/708.
  2. Configure your encoder to supply EIA 608 or CEA 708 caption data with the video.
  3. Test the stream and confirm that the captions appear as intended.

The 608/708 standard can support up to four language tracks, but YouTube’s instructions say YouTube currently supports one embedded caption track. Check current encoder and YouTube guidance before configuring an event. Details are in YouTube’s live caption requirements.

Caption feed sent through supported software

  1. In the event’s Advanced settings, add a 30-second or 60-second broadcast delay, as directed in YouTube’s event instructions.
  2. Turn on Closed captions in the stream setup and copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL.
  3. Give that URL to the captioner or enter it in the supported captioning software according to the vendor’s instructions.
  4. Allow one caption feed for each stream entry point, keep the system clock accurate, and check whether antivirus software interferes with the captioning application.
  5. Test the complete caption path before the live event.

YouTube lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker and StreamText.Net as examples of captioning software. Its page specifies minimum versions for some products: Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or later, Case CATalyst BCS 14.52 or later, and CaptionMaker 5.22 or later. Software compatibility and vendor instructions can change, so confirm current requirements directly with the provider. The event instructions specify one feed per stream entry point.

Choose a latency that fits the event

Latency setting Typical use and tradeoff Automatic live captions
Normal Best suited to non-interactive streams; YouTube says it offers the least buffering and supports all resolutions and live features. Required by YouTube’s documented automatic-caption workflow.
Low For limited interaction; YouTube says most viewers experience less than 10 seconds of latency. This is typical guidance, not a guarantee. Not supported by the documented automatic-caption workflow.
Ultra-low For highly interactive streams; YouTube says most viewers experience less than five seconds of latency. Buffering may increase; this is not a guarantee. Not supported by the documented automatic-caption workflow.

Latency is the delay between the camera capturing an event and the event appearing to viewers. Webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity and do not let the creator choose a latency setting. For details, see YouTube’s latency guidance. If YouTube’s automatic captions are essential, account for their normal-latency requirement before choosing an interactive mode.

Test captions and audio before going live

  1. Run a test stream with speech and movement similar to the planned event.
  2. Listen for clear, intelligible speech and check the captions in the preview.
  3. Confirm the caption source, spoken language and latency setting.
  4. If automatic captions are unavailable or unsuitable, test the professional caption route with the captioner, encoder or software before the event.

YouTube recommends testing streams and monitoring audio and stream health. Encoder-based streaming can use external audio and video equipment, but expensive equipment is not required to begin streaming. If captured speech is unclear, improving microphone placement or audio capture may help; no microphone guarantees accurate recognition.

Do live captions stay on the replay?

YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the stream ends. It generates captions again during the video-on-demand process, and the replay captions may differ from what viewers saw live. Review the archived video and its captions after the event. YouTube’s guidance does not establish one archive outcome for every external caption workflow, so verify the recording separately.

Which caption workflow should you use?

Consideration YouTube automatic captions Supplied or professional captions
Availability Depends on channel access; documented live support is English-only and requires normal latency. Requires a compatible encoder or captioning software and a suitable setup.
Control YouTube generates text from speech; difficult audio can affect recognition. Captions are supplied through embedded data or a caption feed.
Setup Enable the source for each stream in YouTube Studio. Configure the encoder or software; an event feed also requires a delay and signed-URL handoff.
Replay Live captions are replaced by captions generated in YouTube’s VOD process. Archive behavior varies; verify the recorded video and captions.
Best fit Eligible English streams where normal latency works and automated text meets the need. Events that need a managed caption workflow or cannot use the automatic option.

Keep a YouTube channel live with prerecorded video

Captioning is separate from keeping a stream running around the clock. If your goal is to loop uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than caption a live event, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded video, not a camera feed; captions are not a stated StreamNeo feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
