Because BSNL upload performance and fair-use terms depend on your plan and service area, test the connection at the desktop before choosing a resolution or relying on it for continuous broadcasting.
What you need before you start
- A desktop that can remain powered and ventilated for long sessions.
- A stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen bitrate.
- A streaming encoder, such as OBS, configured to send a live feed to YouTube.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to its stream key.
The title does not identify your BSNL plan, connection type, service area, upload rate, or fair-use policy. Download speed alone does not show whether your connection can continuously send video. Check the current terms for your specific plan, including sustained upload speed, any data threshold and the speed after that threshold.

Choose an encoder setting your connection can sustain
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. It also supports H.265 and AV1. For a straightforward desktop setup, H.264 with CBR and two-second keyframes is a practical starting point. YouTube transcodes incoming broadcasts for different viewer formats. YouTube’s live encoder guidance has the current settings details.
The following H.264 figures are YouTube Help recommendations and minimums, not guarantees that a particular BSNL connection will remain stable. YouTube’s guide, accessed in 2026, lists these values:

Start conservatively. Test sustained upload from the desktop’s actual location, ideally over wired Ethernet, while other household devices are doing their usual work. Leave room for normal network variation and other uploads; the cited YouTube guidance does not prescribe a fixed headroom multiplier. Raise the bitrate or resolution only after a representative test stays stable.
Set up the desktop and YouTube stream
- Enable YouTube live streaming. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its stream settings. Copy the stream key; treat it like a password and do not share it. If you need to find the current channel-specific steps, use YouTube’s live encoder help page.
- Prepare the computer. Put the desktop somewhere ventilated, connect it to power, and use wired Ethernet if available. For a continuous session, disable sleep and hibernation, and avoid scheduling automatic restarts or updates during the broadcast.
- Configure the encoder. In OBS or your chosen encoder, select YouTube as the service, use RTMPS where offered, enter the stream key, and set H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a resolution and bitrate your tested upload can support. Use the encoder’s current documentation for exact control names and recovery options.
- Test with real content. Before relying on the stream, run a test with representative audio and movement—not a static screen if the live content will have motion. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Check the encoder’s statistics for dropped frames and YouTube Studio’s stream-health indicators. If health warnings or dropped frames appear, lower bitrate or resolution and test again before treating the setup as dependable.
Check what BSNL can support—and what it cannot guarantee
BSNL’s official tariff document surfaced for Chennai is updated only through 3 September 2019. It is historical and location-specific, so it does not establish current plan prices, upload rates, or fair-use terms for your service. The archived tariff sheet shows why a usage threshold and post-threshold speed may matter, but confirm your own current terms directly with BSNL.

A 24/7 broadcast also uses data continuously. As a simple arithmetic estimate, video payload at a constant bitrate is bitrate multiplied by elapsed time; actual network traffic is higher because audio and transport overhead add to it. This is not a BSNL usage figure. Check any applicable data limits against your plan and actual stream settings.

Keep the computer running and plan for interruptions
- Keep vents unobstructed and make sure the desktop can dissipate heat during long sessions.
- Use a UPS if brief local power cuts are a concern. It may keep the computer and networking equipment running through a short interruption, but it cannot fix an ISP outage or guarantee the broadcast stays connected.
- Understand that power, network, technical, or maintenance issues can interrupt service. BSNL’s terms do not establish uninterrupted service or speed; see its terms and conditions.
- Use your encoder’s documented reconnection or recovery settings, and monitor the stream after any disconnect. Do not assume recovery behavior without checking the current encoder documentation and observing how your setup responds.
Troubleshoot common stream problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or poor stream health | Upload capacity, network variation, or competing household traffic | Lower the bitrate or resolution, reduce other uploads, and repeat a representative test while watching encoder statistics and YouTube stream health. |
| Broadcast stops when nobody is using the desktop | Sleep, hibernation, restart, or local power interruption | Review power and update settings, keep the system ventilated, and consider a UPS for brief local power loss. |
| Stream disconnects despite a running desktop | Internet interruption or encoder connection | Check the local network and BSNL service, confirm the encoder’s recovery configuration, and monitor whether it reconnects. A local UPS will not resolve an ISP outage. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Stream key, service selection, or ingest configuration | Recheck the YouTube service and stream key in the encoder, then run a short test before starting the long broadcast. |
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Use only video, music, and other material you have the rights to stream. A technically stable 24/7 broadcast does not itself establish that the content is permitted or eligible for monetization. Review YouTube’s current live-stream rules and your rights to every component of the loop before broadcasting. For a practical preflight, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.
