LISA (the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) is a planned space-based gravitational-wave observatory led by the European Space Agency (ESA), with NASA and an international consortium as partners. Three spacecraft will fly in a triangular formation, about 2.5 million kilometres apart, and exchange laser beams to measure minute changes in the distances between freely falling proof masses. The mission is planned for launch around 2035, so it has not yet produced observations.
LISA at a glance
LISA is designed to detect gravitational waves by measuring changes in distance rather than by taking pictures of their sources or receiving ordinary light from them. A passing wave should very slightly stretch and compress the geometry formed by the spacecraft. Laser measurements across the triangle will record those changes, and computers on Earth will analyze the data for signals and estimate their source properties.

Gravitational waves come from accelerating masses in extreme systems, including compact stellar remnants and merging black holes. Their effect is extraordinarily small: the wave changes the measured separation between test masses by an amount that must be distinguished from spacecraft motion, instrument noise and other disturbances.

The useful distinction between LISA and a terrestrial detector is frequency. NASA gives LISA a target range of roughly 0.1 mHz to 1 Hz. ESA describes the corresponding signal timescales as lasting from seconds to several hours. This lower-frequency window is different from the higher-frequency range targeted by ground-based instruments such as LIGO and Virgo. Earth-based detectors and LISA are therefore complementary, not competing versions of the same instrument.
On Earth, the detector arms are limited by geography and by disturbances associated with the planet. LISA’s arms are millions of kilometres long and are formed by spacecraft flying in space. The very long baseline gives the mission a way to measure the slow, low-frequency changes expected from sources that are difficult or impossible for ground instruments to observe in the same way.
How LISA will detect a gravitational wave
The detection concept can be understood as a precision measurement of changing distances.

- Three spacecraft form the measuring system. LISA’s spacecraft will occupy the corners of a large triangular formation. Each side is planned to be about 2.5 million kilometres long.
- Proof masses provide reference objects. Inside each spacecraft, freely falling proof masses serve as the objects whose relative motion is monitored. The measurement is intended to follow gravitational effects on those masses rather than ordinary contact forces.
- Lasers cross the arms. Laser beams will be exchanged between spacecraft over the long baselines. The instrument tracks the laser information needed to determine how the separations between the proof masses change.
- A passing wave alters the measured geometry. As a gravitational wave moves through the formation, it is expected to produce tiny, time-dependent changes in the distances measured along the arms. The pattern is not a simple expansion of every distance at once; the relative changes contain the information used to identify a gravitational-wave signal.
- Ground computers search the data. NASA’s mission description says computers on Earth will search the measurements for individual signals and estimate properties of their sources. A detection is therefore an inference from a precisely recorded pattern in the laser measurements.
What the lasers measure
LISA is not measuring a black hole’s surface, photographing a merger or listening for a sound wave in space. It is comparing how the distances associated with the proof masses evolve over time. A candidate signal must be separated from instrumental disturbances and other sources of noise, then matched to the expected behavior of a gravitational-wave source.

The long arms matter because a given fractional change in distance produces a larger absolute change over a longer baseline. The mission’s design combines that scale with freely falling reference masses and laser metrology. Those features are the reason LISA can target frequencies below the main operating range of ground-based observatories.
What LISA is intended to discover
Compact binaries in the Milky Way
ESA lists compact binary stars in our galaxy among LISA’s objectives. These systems contain dense stellar remnants orbiting one another and can produce persistent, low-frequency gravitational waves. A population of such systems would help build a census of compact objects in the Milky Way.
The origin and growth of massive black holes
Massive black holes at the centers of galaxies can grow through mergers and accretion. LISA is designed to study gravitational-wave signals from massive-black-hole systems, providing information about how those objects formed and changed over cosmic history. NASA identifies black-hole history as one of the mission’s central scientific themes.

Extreme mass-ratio inspirals
An extreme mass-ratio inspiral occurs when a relatively small compact object moves around a much more massive black hole. ESA includes these systems among LISA’s goals. Their signals could let researchers examine the environment close to a massive black hole and test whether the observed waveform agrees with predictions of gravity.

Tests of gravity and the expansion of the Universe
LISA’s objectives also include tests of gravity and measurements related to the Universe’s expansion history. The mission could compare the detailed evolution of gravitational-wave signals with theoretical predictions and use suitable sources as probes of cosmological history.
Relic waves, bursts and unexpected sources
ESA lists possible relic gravitational waves, bursts and unexpected sources as additional targets. These categories are deliberately broad. They describe phenomena the mission may search for, not detections that have already been made.
LISA compared with ground-based observatories
The most useful comparison is by frequency, location and source population. It is misleading to call one approach universally better.

| Characteristic | LISA | Ground-based observatories such as LIGO and Virgo |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Three spacecraft flying in space | Interferometers built on Earth |
| Baseline | About 2.5 million kilometres between spacecraft | Terrestrial arms, constrained by the size and environment of the sites |
| Target frequency emphasis | Approximately 0.1 mHz to 1 Hz | Higher-frequency gravitational waves than LISA is designed to target |
| Representative sources | Compact binaries in the Milky Way, massive-black-hole systems and extreme mass-ratio inspirals | Sources such as stellar-mass black-hole and neutron-star systems in their accessible band |
| Operating status | Planned mission; no LISA observations yet | Existing ground-based observing programs |
The bands overlap in the broad sense that astrophysical systems can evolve through different frequencies, but the observatories are designed around different measurement regimes. A future source might be studied by more than one facility at different stages or frequencies, while many LISA targets will not be practical targets for a ground detector.

Mission status, partners and schedule
ESA leadership and NASA participation
NASA reports that ESA formally adopted LISA on 25 January 2024. Adoption enabled work to proceed on the scientific instruments and spacecraft. ESA describes LISA as an ESA-led mission carried out with NASA and an international consortium.
NASA’s planned contributions include lasers, telescopes, charge-management devices, and science and engineering support. These roles support the laser links and the control of the proof-mass environment, but they do not change the basic division of responsibility: ESA leads the mission while NASA is a major partner.
The planned launch date
NASA’s 2024 account describes a planned launch in 2035 on Ariane 6. ESA’s current factsheet gives approximately 2035, while NASA’s mission material also refers to the mid-2030s. These are schedule targets. They should not be read as a launch that has already occurred or as a guaranteed day on the calendar.
LISA Pathfinder’s role
LISA follows technology work by LISA Pathfinder. NASA says Pathfinder demonstrated key technologies needed for the mission. That earlier project was a technology demonstration, not the full three-spacecraft observatory and not a source of LISA science observations.

What a LISA detection would and would not mean
A future LISA detection would be a measured gravitational-wave signature reconstructed from changes in laser-measured separations. Researchers could then estimate properties such as the nature of the source and how its orbit or merger evolved. The result would be a measurement of spacetime dynamics, not an optical image.
Some sources may also emit electromagnetic radiation, but LISA’s detection method does not require ordinary light from the source. Conversely, a source could be scientifically important even if no telescope sees it. The gravitational-wave data and electromagnetic observations, when both exist, would provide different and potentially complementary information.
Because the mission is still planned, statements about its discoveries must remain prospective. The listed source classes, frequency range and science objectives describe what LISA is being built to investigate; they are not a catalog of results.
Why the mission’s geometry is central
A single distance measurement would not reveal the full pattern of a gravitational wave. Three spacecraft provide multiple arms and multiple lines of sight. Comparing the changing measurements across the triangular formation helps distinguish a coherent gravitational-wave pattern from a local disturbance affecting one spacecraft or one measurement path.
The formation also gives LISA a long observation baseline in space without constructing a physical structure millions of kilometres long. The spacecraft remain separate, and the laser links turn their relative positions into the detector’s measuring network.
Quick Recap
What to watch for as LISA develops
- Schedule updates: the 2035 launch target may be refined as development proceeds.
- Instrument and spacecraft milestones: these indicate progress toward the adopted mission but are not gravitational-wave detections.
- Clear separation between targets and results: announcements about expected massive-black-hole mergers, compact binaries or relic waves are mission objectives until LISA is operating and reports data.
- Multi-observatory context: comparisons with LIGO and Virgo should focus on frequency coverage, detector location and source classes rather than declaring one detector superior.
