It is usually called persona prompting or role prompting: a prompt assigns an AI model a role or identity to shape its response. When the model is asked to approximate a particular target user’s perspective or behavior, the more specific term is user persona simulation.
What do the terms mean?
Persona prompting and role prompting describe the broad technique of instructing a model to respond from an assigned identity or point of view. The terms overlap in ordinary use; neither is a universally exclusive label.

User persona simulation is the narrower application: asking a model to approximate how a described kind of user might react, decide, or give feedback in a particular situation. It is a generated simulation, not a real participant’s response.

How do you prompt an AI to simulate a user?
Vanderbilt University’s Persona Pattern summarizes the basic structure as “Act as Persona X” and “Perform task Y.” For user simulation, make the target and task more specific:
#1 Best Overall
- Describe the product, service, or situation the model should consider.
- Define the target user, using relevant attributes or evidence rather than a vague label.
- Ask for a concrete response, such as likely questions, concerns, choices, or feedback.
- State any limits, such as what the model should not assume or what information it lacks.
For example: “Act as a first-time user who has limited experience with online banking. Review this account-opening screen and identify steps that may be confusing. Explain your reasoning, and do not assume details that are not shown.” This asks for a perspective; it does not establish what actual first-time users think.
What is the difference between a role prompt and user research?
| Approach | What it does | What its output supports |
|---|---|---|
| General role or persona prompt | Assigns an identity or context to shape an answer. | A response framed from the requested perspective or in the requested style. |
| User persona simulation | Asks the model to approximate a specified user’s reactions or behavior. | Ideas or hypotheses to investigate, not evidence of real users’ views. |
| Research-grounded persona work | Uses user data to define or inform a persona and evaluates the result. | A more evidence-based representation, subject to the quality of its data and validation. |
A 2026 scoping review of 81 articles distinguishes prompting strategies including attribute-specific, role-play-based, data-driven, and creative approaches, and identifies evaluation as an important concern. The 81 is the review’s corpus size, not a count of all work on AI-generated personas.

Does assigning an expert persona make answers more accurate?
Do not treat a role instruction as proof of expertise or as a dependable accuracy boost. In a report dated December 7, 2025, Wharton Generative AI Labs found that expert personas did not reliably improve factual accuracy on the tested GPQA Diamond and MMLU-Pro benchmarks. The report notes that persona instructions may still shape context, perspective, tone, or approach; its result concerns those tested benchmarks, not every model or task. See “Playing Pretend: Expert Personas Don’t Improve Factual Accuracy”.
What are the risks of synthetic user personas?
Generated personas can sound plausible while reflecting bias or narrow assumptions. A 2024 CHI study examined 450 LLM-generated persona descriptions and reported biases involving age, occupation, and pain points, along with a strong US representation skew. Those findings caution against treating model-generated personas as representative of a wider population without checking them against suitable user evidence.
Quick Recap
Rank #3
- Use simulated feedback to surface questions or hypotheses, not to claim what a user group believes.
- When possible, ground persona attributes in research and check the output against real users or other appropriate reference data.
- Be explicit about the population and context; a generic persona may not reflect differences in geography, experience, or circumstances.
