If other devices connect to Wi‑Fi but your phone does not, start with the phone: confirm Wi‑Fi is on and Airplane Mode is off, toggle Wi‑Fi, restart the phone, then test it on another Wi‑Fi network. That test separates a phone-side problem from one specific to the original network. Also check whether the phone cannot join Wi‑Fi at all or joins but cannot reach the internet; those symptoms need different troubleshooting.
First, identify what is failing
Check the phone’s Wi‑Fi status and the exact network name. Is the network missing from the list, does the phone reject the password or fail to join, or does it say it is connected while apps and websites cannot get online? A Wi‑Fi connection without internet is not the same as a failure to join the network.

Google’s Pixel guidance says that when other devices can use the network, the problem is most likely with the phone. That makes a phone-side cause more likely, but it does not prove every router setting or network condition is sound. Google’s troubleshooting flow distinguishes among a phone problem, a network problem, and an internet-service problem. Google Pixel Phone Help

- Confirm the basic controls. Make sure Wi‑Fi is enabled and Airplane Mode is off, then select the intended network. On iPhone or iPad, Apple also advises checking whether the network shows as connected. If the Wi‑Fi control is greyed out, Apple recommends restarting the device; it also points users to check Connectivity Assist. Apple Support (Ireland)
- Toggle Wi‑Fi, then restart the phone. Turn Wi‑Fi off and back on. If it still will not join, restart the phone before trying broader resets. Google Pixel Phone Help
- Move closer to the router. Check whether the phone’s signal improves near the router. A weak or absent signal can mean the device is out of range. Google Android Help
- Forget and re-add the saved network on Android or Pixel. Remove the saved network from the phone’s Wi‑Fi settings, select it again, and enter the network name, security details, and password as required. A saved profile can be the issue even when the password works on other devices. Google Pixel Phone Help
On an iPhone or iPad, do not start by resetting all network settings. Test the simpler checks and the alternate-network test below first; a full reset removes saved network information and other settings.

Test the phone on another Wi‑Fi network
Try a trusted hotspot or a different location. If the phone connects there, concentrate on the original network’s range, router compatibility, configuration, or internet service. If it cannot connect to any Wi‑Fi network, the issue is more likely specific to the phone; Apple advises contacting Apple when an iPhone or iPad cannot connect to any Wi‑Fi network. Apple Support (Ireland) Google Pixel Phone Help
If the phone works elsewhere, check the original network
Range, router support, and frequency band
Confirm the phone is within range and that the router supports it. If the router offers separate Wi‑Fi networks for different frequency bands, try another available band—for example, 5 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz. This is a diagnostic test, not a guarantee: the available bands and compatibility depend on the phone and router. Apple recommends checking router compatibility, firmware, and another frequency where available. Apple Support (Ireland)

Router firmware and managed networks
Check whether the router has a firmware update, using the router maker’s instructions. If the network belongs to a workplace, school, hotel, or other organization, contact its administrator instead of changing settings you do not control. Apple specifically cautions users on managed networks to check with their IT department before resetting network settings. Apple Support (Ireland)

A less common case: two nearby routers share a network name
Google documents a specific issue with Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi operating near another router that broadcasts the same Wi‑Fi name. A device can attach to the other router, switch between them, or connect to an older router. In that setup, Google suggests options such as disabling Wi‑Fi on a modem/router combo, disconnecting an old standalone router where appropriate, or renaming one network. Renaming can require devices to reconnect, so follow the equipment maker’s guidance before changing a network you do not administer. Google Home and Nest Help

If Wi‑Fi connects but there is no internet
Keep the Wi‑Fi-join problem separate from an internet outage. If the phone shows connected but cannot reach websites or apps, check whether other devices on the same network can get online. If they also lack internet, the issue is not isolated to the phone; contact the internet service provider or the network administrator. Google’s Android and Pixel instructions distinguish Wi‑Fi connection problems from internet connection problems. Google Android Help Google Pixel Phone Help
Check software that may interfere
Pixel and other Android phones
On Pixel, test Wi‑Fi in safe mode. If it works in safe mode, a downloaded app is likely involved; remove recently installed apps one at a time and retest. Google also recommends setting date and time automatically, since incorrect phone date or time can cause Wi‑Fi connection problems. Menu labels may differ by Android version and manufacturer, so consult the phone maker’s instructions if the steps do not match your device. Google Pixel Phone Help

If VPN or security software is installed, Apple recommends uninstalling it, restarting the device, and testing Wi‑Fi. If removing the software fixes the problem but you need it, contact the VPN manager or software provider for help restoring it without reintroducing the connection issue. Apple Support (Ireland)

Restart the router or modem when the evidence points there
Restart network equipment if the phone works on another Wi‑Fi network, or if the original network is also having trouble. For equipment you own, follow its maker’s instructions. Google’s general Android guidance says to unplug a router, wait 30 seconds, reconnect it, and allow its indicator lights to return. The Pixel guide gives a separate router-and-modem sequence: unplug for 15 seconds, reconnect, check cable connections, and wait for normal lights. These are different instructions for different guidance contexts; use the equipment maker’s directions if they differ. If lights remain abnormal or service does not return, contact the ISP or network administrator. Google Android Help Google Pixel Phone Help

Use network-settings reset only after simpler fixes fail
A network reset is a later troubleshooting step because it removes saved connection information and may affect other settings. On iPhone or iPad, Apple says Reset Network Settings removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords, mobile settings, and VPN/APN settings. If a school or employer manages the device or network, ask IT before resetting. Apple Support (Ireland)
On Pixel, Google lists the path as Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Bluetooth & Wi‑Fi. This resets more than a single saved network. Menu wording and effects can vary by device, so check the phone maker’s current instructions before proceeding. Google Pixel Phone Help
Quick Recap
When to contact support
- Contact the network administrator or ISP if the network is managed, other devices also lack internet, or router/modem indicators or service remain abnormal.
- Contact the router maker if the phone connects elsewhere but the original router appears unsupported, misconfigured, or faulty.
- Contact the phone maker if the phone cannot join any Wi‑Fi network after basic checks and software troubleshooting. Keep the exact symptom, networks tested, and steps already tried handy; these details help support distinguish a device fault from a network issue.
