“HTML5 local storage” usually means localStorage, a browser feature for saving small amounts of string-based data on a device. A website can use it to remember preferences between ordinary browser sessions. The data belongs to the site’s origin, is not a cross-device sync service, and is not guaranteed to remain forever.
What does HTML5 local storage mean?
localStorage is the persistent part of the browser’s Web Storage API. It gives JavaScript access to a Storage object associated with the current document’s origin. The current normative definition is in the WHATWG HTML Living Standard; “HTML5” remains a familiar historical name for the technology.

MDN describes the Window.localStorage property as providing access to a Storage object for the document’s origin, with data saved across browser sessions.

How does localStorage store data?
It stores key/value pairs as strings, using UTF-16 encoding. JavaScript can write, read, remove, or clear entries with methods on the Storage object:

setItem(key, value)saves a value.getItem(key)retrieves a value, or returnsnullif the key is absent.removeItem(key)deletes one entry.clear()removes all entries for that origin.
Values that are not strings, such as JavaScript objects, need to be converted first—for example, with JSON.stringify()—and parsed after retrieval. Local storage is useful for modest information such as a saved interface preference, not as a general-purpose database.
What are its scope and lifetime?
Storage is associated with an origin: the combination of scheme, host, and port. Pages at the same origin can use the same local storage area, but different subdomains are distinct, and HTTP and HTTPS versions of a site have separate storage. It does not automatically share data with other websites or synchronize it across a user’s devices.

Unlike sessionStorage, localStorage has no set expiration time and ordinarily remains available after the browser is closed and reopened. That does not make it permanent: users can clear browser data, and browser settings or policies can restrict persistence. In private browsing, storage is temporary and is cleared when the private session ends.

| Feature | localStorage | sessionStorage | IndexedDB |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scope | Shared by documents at the same origin | Associated with an origin and partitioned by tab/page session | Browser-side database; the cited MDN guidance presents it as an alternative for larger datasets |
| Lifetime | Persists across ordinary browser restarts unless cleared or blocked | Cleared when the page session ends | Not specified here |
| Access pattern | Synchronous | Synchronous | Asynchronous |
| Typical fit | Small, simple string key/value data | Temporary per-session data | Larger datasets or work where blocking the main thread is undesirable |
Both Web Storage options are synchronous: a read or write runs in the current JavaScript execution flow and can delay other work. Frequent operations or larger amounts of data may affect responsiveness. MDN’s Web Storage API guide points to asynchronous IndexedDB for larger datasets or cases where non-blocking access matters.

What should developers watch out for?
- Storage access can fail. Access may throw a
SecurityErrorif the document has an invalid origin or browser policy blocks persistence. - Do not rely on file URLs. Behavior for pages opened from
file:URLs is undefined and may vary between browsers. - There is no universal quota to assume. Limits and policies can vary, so avoid treating localStorage as unlimited storage.
- Use it for recoverable state. Preferences or other small data that can be recreated are a better fit than critical records or data that must sync across devices.
