Digital asset mining is the process used by proof-of-work blockchains to compete for the right to add a valid block of transactions. Miners use computation to find a result that meets the network’s rules; independent nodes check the proposed block before accepting it. The term applies most clearly to proof-of-work networks such as Bitcoin—not to every method blockchains use to produce blocks.
What digital asset mining means
Mining is a form of distributed consensus: participants expend computing power to compete to produce blocks, while network nodes verify that each block follows the protocol. Accepted blocks add transactions to the shared ledger and connect to earlier chain data. That connection means rewriting old history requires redoing the work for the altered block and catching up with later blocks.

Bitcoin.org describes mining as a way to confirm pending transactions, preserve their chronological order, and help computers agree on the network’s state. Mining also makes it harder to manipulate block production simply by creating many identities: competition depends on proof of computational work, not the number of identities a participant claims to have.

How Bitcoin mining works
- Prepare a candidate block. Mining software gathers transactions and assembles a proposed block.
- Search for proof of work. Mining hardware repeatedly hashes block-header data, changing nonce-related inputs to seek a hash below the target set by network difficulty.
- Submit a result. A miner that finds a qualifying hash broadcasts its candidate block.
- Validate and append. Network nodes independently check the block against Bitcoin’s rules. If valid, it can be added to the chain; nodes do not accept a miner’s claim without checking it.
Bitcoin.org says blocks are appended roughly every 10 minutes on average; this is an average, not a guaranteed interval. Proof of work makes rewriting confirmed history more costly and difficult, but it does not make attacks mathematically impossible.

What miners receive—and why rewards change
Bitcoin miners can receive a protocol-issued block subsidy and the transaction fees included in a block. The subsidy falls at scheduled halving events: Bitcoin.org’s glossary says a halving occurs every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years, and that the subsidy began at 50 BTC in 2009. Transaction fees are not fixed; they vary with demand and the fees users choose.
Those rewards do not establish whether mining will be profitable. Economics also depend on factors such as equipment cost and efficiency, electricity, cooling, uptime, network difficulty, fees, and the asset’s market value. Bitcoin.org cautions that mining is not an easy way to make money.

Solo mining and mining pools
Miners may operate independently or combine computing power through a pool. The trade-off is mainly between variable, infrequent outcomes and shared, more regular payouts.
| Approach | How payouts work | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Solo mining | If successful, the miner keeps the block reward and transaction fees. | Receipts are less frequent and more variable. |
| Pooled mining | Participants share proceeds roughly in proportion to the hashing power they contribute. | Payments are generally smaller but more frequent than solo rewards. |
What equipment Bitcoin mining uses
Bitcoin mining today is a specialized activity. It typically uses purpose-built hardware called application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) miners, rather than an ordinary computer, and consumes electricity while operating. Hardware is only part of the setup: operating conditions, energy costs, cooling, and network difficulty also affect the economics. The fact that ASIC miners are used does not make any particular device a reliable investment or guarantee a return.

Mining versus staking: what is the difference?
Mining and staking can both contribute to a blockchain’s consensus, but they describe different mechanisms. “Mining” most accurately refers to proof of work. Proof-of-stake networks generally use validators that stake capital under protocol rules and help propose or check blocks.
| Dimension | Proof of work / mining | Proof of stake / validation |
|---|---|---|
| Resource used to participate | Computation; practical Bitcoin mining uses specialized hardware and electricity. | Capital staked under protocol rules, plus validator software and network connectivity. |
| Block production | Miners compete to find valid proof-of-work results. | Validators are selected under the protocol to propose blocks and attest to blocks. |
| Costs and risks | Hardware, energy, operating conditions, network difficulty, and variable rewards. | Staked capital, validator operations, and penalties for protocol-defined misconduct. |
| Common terms | Mining, miners, hash rate. | Staking, validators, attestations. |
These are broad distinctions, not universal operating rules: each blockchain sets its own mechanism and incentives. Ethereum’s documentation, for example, describes a 32 ETH deposit and three software components for a solo validator, and says staked ETH can be destroyed for specified dishonest conduct. Those details apply to Ethereum, not to every proof-of-stake network.

Can Ethereum still be mined?
No. Ethereum switched off proof-of-work mining when The Merge completed on September 15, 2022. Ethereum now uses proof-of-stake validators, so participating in its consensus is called validation or staking rather than mining. Ethereum.org reports that The Merge reduced Ethereum’s energy consumption by approximately 99.95%; that figure is Ethereum.org’s comparison for Ethereum, not a general estimate for all proof-of-stake systems.

What mining does—and does not—guarantee
- It helps order transactions: accepted blocks record transactions in a shared sequence.
- It raises the cost of rewriting history: an attacker would need to redo work and catch up with subsequent blocks. This increases difficulty and cost; it is not an absolute impossibility claim.
- It is not the same as staking: proof-of-stake systems use a different participation and block-validation mechanism.
- It is not a promise of income: rewards, operating costs, and asset values can change, and the cited sources do not establish current mining returns.
