Heat sink paste is a thermal interface compound placed between a heat-producing component and a cooler. It fills tiny gaps between their contact surfaces, helping heat pass into the cooler; it does not replace the cooler itself. For a typical desktop CPU, it sits between the processor’s integrated heat spreader and the cooler’s base plate or water block.
What is heat sink paste?
Heat sink paste is a compound used to improve heat transfer across the contact between a component and its cooling hardware. It is also called thermal paste, thermal grease, heat paste, CPU paste, thermal gel, or thermal interface material (TIM). Intel describes it as a silvery-gray substance used between a processor’s integrated heat spreader (IHS) and a cooler’s base plate or water block. Intel’s thermal paste explainer describes its role as enabling efficient heat transfer from the processor to the cooler.

The surfaces may look smooth, but microscopic imperfections leave small gaps where direct contact is incomplete. Paste fills those gaps and helps heat move from the component into the cooler, which then dissipates it. It is an interface material—not a heatsink, fan, or substitute for adequate cooling hardware.

In a common CPU installation, the paste bridges the interface between the CPU’s IHS and the cooler’s contact surface. Without an effective interface, small gaps can impede heat transfer. The paste is intended to improve that connection when the cooler is mounted; the cooler and its surrounding airflow remain responsible for carrying heat away.
#1 Best Overall
- CONSISTENT QUALITY: Our thermal paste packaging design has evolved over time, but the formula has remained the same, ensuring reliable performance.
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste is made of carbon microparticles, guaranteeing extremely high thermal conductivity. This ensures that heat from the CPU/GPU is dissipated quickly & efficiently
- SAFE APPLICATION: The MX-4 is metal-free and non-electrical conductive which eliminates any risks of causing short circuit, adding more protection to the CPU and VGA cards
- HIGH DURABILITY: In contrast to metal and silicon thermal compound, the MX-4 does not compromise over time. Once applied, you do not need to apply it again as it will last at least for 8 years
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners
“Thermal interface material” is a broader category than paste. Depending on the component package and installation, a TIM may instead be a pad or a phase-change material. AMD’s Versal packaging guidance discusses these alternatives for the device families covered by that manual. That is a device-specific example, not a universal recommendation for consumer CPUs.
Do you need to add paste when installing a CPU cooler?
Check the cooler’s instructions and inspect its contact surface first. Some coolers come with TIM already applied. Intel says not to add more paste when pre-applied material is present. If the cooler has no pre-applied TIM, follow the instructions for that exact cooler, processor, and paste.

For general consumer CPU installations, Intel recommends putting a small amount in the center of the IHS and allowing the pressure from mounting the cooler to spread it. Its pea- or rice-sized descriptions are rough guidance, not a precise universal measurement. Too little may leave part of the surface uncovered; too much may spill out or impair the interface. See Intel’s instructions for applying or removing TIM and defer to the relevant hardware maker’s directions.
When should you replace heat sink paste?
Replace the paste when the cooler is removed and will be reinstalled for a lasting installation: Intel advises cleaning off the old TIM and applying new material rather than reusing it. Its general consumer explainer says reapplication is usually not needed more than once every few years in most cases, but also identifies cooler removal and rising CPU temperatures as reasons to replace it. That is general guidance, not a fixed service interval; equipment and usage vary.

- EASY TO APPLY: BSFF thermal paste has ideal consistency and is very easy to use even for beginners
For removal, Intel’s support instructions specify a suitable delicate task wiper and isopropyl alcohol, followed by waiting for the alcohol to dry before applying new TIM. Check the device and cooler instructions before cleaning, since device-specific directions take precedence.
How should you compare thermal interface materials?
Choose a material suited to the component and installation rather than assuming every device needs paste or that one product is best for all systems. AMD’s Versal packaging manual names several factors for TIM selection: thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, spreading characteristics, long-term stability and reliability, ease of application, and heatsink pressure. These are useful comparison criteria, but the guidance is specific to Versal device packaging and does not rank consumer CPU pastes.

- NEXT-LEVEL THERMAL PERFORMANCE: MX-7 features a performance-optimized, dense, and highly viscous consistency. Its high filler content ensures exceptional heat transfer
- LONG-TERM STABILITY: High cohesion prevents pump-out, dry-out, or bleeding even under repeated thermal cycles, ensuring long-lasting and consistent performance without the need for frequent reapplication
- PERFECT APPLICATION: MX-7 cannot be spread manually by design. Its low adhesion allows the paste to distribute naturally under cooler pressure, forming a thin bond line without trapping air bubbles
- SAFE FOR ALL DEVICES: MX-7 is electrically non-conductive and non-capacitive, making it completely safe for CPUs, GPUs, laptops, consoles, and other, no risk of short circuits or electrical discharge
- INCLUDES MX CLEANER: Thoroughly removes old thermal paste and prepares contact surfaces for optimal performance before applying new thermal compound.
- Material and package: Confirm whether the hardware calls for grease, a pad, phase-change material, or another specified interface.
- Electrical conductivity: Consider the manufacturer’s guidance on electrical properties, particularly where accidental contact with nearby components is possible.
- Application and mounting: Match the material’s application method to the available instructions and the pressure provided by the cooler.
- Stability: Consider the manufacturer’s information about long-term reliability for the intended use.
Those criteria help frame a choice; they do not establish a universal ranking or guarantee a particular temperature improvement.

Does every device use heat sink paste?
No. The required thermal interface depends on the component’s package and the cooling assembly. Some hardware uses paste, while other designs specify pads or phase-change material. Use the instructions for the exact device rather than applying CPU-paste guidance to unrelated electronics.
