What Is HDMI Type C? Mini HDMI Explained

HDMI Type C means Mini HDMI, a 19-pin connector found on some portable devices. Learn how it differs from USB Type-C and which cable connects it to standard HDMI.

HDMI Type C is Mini HDMI, a smaller 19-pin HDMI connector used on some portable devices. It is not the same as USB Type-C. If your device has a Mini HDMI port and your TV or monitor has a standard HDMI port, use a Mini HDMI Type C-to-HDMI Type A cable.

What HDMI Type C means

HDMI connector names describe physical connector types. Type A is standard HDMI, Type C is Mini HDMI, and Type D is Micro HDMI, as Sony’s port guide explains. Mini HDMI is smaller than standard HDMI and may be used where a device has less room for a connector.

ASUS lists the Type C plug as 19-pin and 10.42 mm × 2.42 mm. Those measurements describe the plug, not the opening in the device. Connector size alone does not establish a device’s supported resolution, refresh rate, or other HDMI features; check the specifications for the particular device.

HDMI Type C is not USB Type-C

The similar names refer to different connectors and standards. Mini HDMI Type C is an HDMI connector. USB Type-C is a separate connector used for USB and, on some devices, video.

HDMI Licensing Administrator describes HDMI Alt Mode as a way for an HDMI-enabled source device to use a USB Type-C connector to connect directly to an HDMI display. That does not mean every USB Type-C port outputs video or supports HDMI Alt Mode; manufacturers determine which features their devices support. Check the device specifications before choosing a cable or adapter.

Which cable connects Mini HDMI to a TV?

If the source device has a confirmed Mini HDMI Type C port and the TV or monitor has a standard HDMI Type A port, look for a Mini HDMI Type C male-to-HDMI Type A male cable. For example, Raspberry Pi lists a cable with those plug types; its listed 19-pin plugs and 1,000 mm length are specific to that product, not universal requirements.

  1. Identify the source port. Check the device manual or specifications for Mini HDMI, HDMI Type C, USB Type-C, or another port. Sony recommends consulting the product specifications or operating instructions.
  2. Identify the display port. A standard HDMI socket is Type A. If the display has a different input, the cable must match that port instead.
  3. Match both cable ends to the ports. For Mini HDMI on the source and standard HDMI on the display, choose Type C male to Type A male. Do not substitute a Micro HDMI Type D cable for a Mini HDMI port.

Do not infer a device’s video capabilities from the connector shape or a cable listing. Confirm supported features in the device documentation.

Why checking the exact port matters

Mini and Micro HDMI can be easy to confuse because both are smaller than standard HDMI, but their plug shapes differ: Type C is Mini and Type D is Micro. A cable that fits one does not fit the other. The HDMI connector approval list also cautions that approval or listing alone does not guarantee that a product conforms, works correctly, or interoperates with another product; see HDMI Licensing Administrator’s connector information.
