On iPhone, it can accompany actions such as touching and holding a Home Screen icon, as well as incoming alerts. On Apple Watch, taps on your wrist can signal notifications, alerts, and interactions—and a feature called Taptic Time can communicate the time without speaking it.
Apple’s user guides describe what these cues feel like and how to configure them, but do not explain the devices’ actuator hardware or signal-generation process in component-level detail. The experience and settings are documented; a specific motor design or identical hardware across iPhone and Apple Watch should not be assumed.

How haptic feedback works in everyday use
A haptic cue is a tactile signal associated with an action or event. Instead of relying only on a sound or something on screen, the device gives you a vibration or tap you can feel. Apple describes iPhone haptic feedback as a vibration during some actions; on Apple Watch, the cues are taps felt on the wrist.

How iPhone and Apple Watch haptics differ
| Device | Where you feel it | Documented uses | Relevant controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | As vibration from the phone | Some actions, such as touching and holding a Home Screen icon; incoming call and alert vibrations | Alert haptics and vibration patterns in Settings > Sounds & Haptics |
| Apple Watch | As taps on the wrist | Notifications, alerts, interactions, and Taptic Time | Off, Default, or Prominent haptic setting; Taptic Time patterns in Clock settings |
These are differences in documented use and controls, not a measurement of which device has stronger haptics. Apple’s cited pages do not provide comparable strength measurements.
Configure haptics on iPhone
To choose when haptics play for incoming alerts, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics. The available choices and wording can vary with iOS version. Apple’s iPhone guide also describes choosing a vibration pattern for a ringtone or text tone and creating a custom vibration.

If Haptics is set to Never Play, Apple says incoming calls and alerts will not vibrate. That setting concerns incoming calls and alerts; it should not be treated as a universal explanation for every kind of tactile response on every iPhone or iOS version.

Adjust haptic alerts on Apple Watch
On Apple Watch, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics and choose Off, Default, or Prominent. Apple says Prominent adds a pre-announcement tap for some other haptic alerts. Apple also documents alert patterns that pair sounds with haptics, which can be previewed in the alert settings.
For the best haptic results, Apple advises that the back of the watch make skin contact and that the fit be snug but comfortable. This is fit guidance, not a recommendation to buy a particular band.

Use Taptic Time to feel the time
Taptic Time turns the current time into a pattern of taps. To set it up, open Settings > Clock > Taptic Time on the watch and choose a pattern. Apple also documents configuring the feature in the paired iPhone’s Apple Watch app. To check the time, touch and hold two fingers on the watch face and feel the sequence.

- Digits: Long taps represent tens and short taps represent ones, conveying hours and minutes.
- Terse: A less precise pattern that conveys the time within a 15-minute range.
- Morse Code: Taps represent each digit in Morse code.
Apple notes that Taptic Time is disabled if the watch is set to always speak the time. Its guidance is to enable Control With Silent Mode under Speak Time. With VoiceOver on, Apple describes activating Taptic Time by double-tapping the watch face while the display is inactive.
For the setup and pattern details, see Apple’s Tell time with haptic feedback on Apple Watch.
If haptics are not working as expected
- Incoming iPhone calls or alerts do not vibrate: Check Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics and confirm the selected option allows alert haptics. Never Play disables vibration for incoming calls and alerts.
- Apple Watch taps are absent or hard to feel: Check Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics and select a setting other than Off. Make sure the watch back touches your skin and the fit is snug but comfortable.
- Taptic Time is unavailable: Check whether the watch is set to always speak the time; Apple says this disables Taptic Time unless Control With Silent Mode is enabled under Speak Time.
These checks address the settings and fit Apple documents. They do not diagnose every cause across all models and software versions.
