Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPack for the day’s schedule, put the heaviest books and computer closest to your back, and use compartments to keep the load balanced and small supplies easy to find. A quick weekly clean-out helps keep unnecessary weight and loose papers from building up.
What should go in the backpack each day?
Start with the timetable or class list for that day. Pack the books, notebooks, technology and other supplies the student will actually need; leave out items that are not required. Lunch, a water bottle and sports equipment count toward the total load too, so include them when deciding what to carry.

Once a week, take everything out and remove papers, supplies and other items that are no longer needed. If the school provides a locker or another storage option, use it for things that do not need to travel between home and school.
Where should the heaviest books go?
- Place the heaviest items nearest the back. Put textbooks and a computer in the compartment closest to the student’s body, rather than in an outer pocket.
- Keep the load centered. Use the backpack’s compartments to distribute weight, and arrange other items evenly on the left and right sides.
- Group small supplies. Keep pens, chargers and similar items together in an existing pocket or pouch so they are easier to locate. This is an organizational tip; the American Academy of Pediatrics’ packing guidance specifically recommends using compartments to help distribute the load.
How should the backpack fit when it is packed?
Choose a pack sized for the student, with two broad shoulder straps and a padded back. Wear both straps and adjust them so the backpack sits close to the body. After packing, check how the student walks: leaning forward to support the bag or having difficulty walking can be signs that the load is too heavy. The AAP recommends removing items, redistributing the load or seeking another carrying option when needed.

How much should a school backpack weigh?
Published guidance does not establish one weight limit that fits every child. The AAP’s dedicated backpack-safety page and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ August 2026 advice give a guideline of no more than 15% of a child’s body weight. A separate AAP family-tips page gives a range of 10% to 20%. An Associated Press report published August 4, 2026, describes an expert’s concern that evidence does not establish a universal threshold for every child.
Treat those percentages as guidance, not a guarantee that a load is comfortable or suitable. A child’s size, strength, development and daily routine matter; keeping the pack as light as possible and watching for changes in posture or walking are practical checks.

What if the student still struggles to carry it?
First remove items that are not needed that day, then reposition the remaining load close to the back and adjust both straps. If carrying remains difficult, ask the school whether a rolling backpack is allowed. It may be less practical on stairs or crowded walkways, so consider the student’s route as well as the school’s rules. For back pain that also occurs when the student is not wearing the backpack, the AAP advises contacting a pediatrician.

Two safety points to keep in mind
- Have the student remove the backpack before riding in a moving vehicle; wearing one can interfere with seatbelt function, according to the AP report.
- The AAP says backpacks have not been shown to cause scoliosis or other long-term spine problems. That does not make pain or difficulty carrying a pack something to ignore.
