h0neytr4p is an open-source, web-focused honeypot for detecting reconnaissance and exploit attempts against decoy paths. You configure a trap to match activity of interest and observe the requests; the point is to attract probes without building and running the real vulnerable application the trap represents. The original project describes that workflow in its repository.
How h0neytr4p traps web probes
A trap represents a path or behavior worth watching, such as a request associated with a vulnerability, exploit, or reconnaissance technique. The original project’s instructions are to create a trap, place it in /traps, and restart the program. This gives defenders a way to observe probing without standing up the corresponding vulnerable service.

The project’s stated purpose is detection and observation, not proof that a system is secure or a guarantee that every attack will be caught. The reviewed project materials do not report measured detection rates, attack volumes, or effectiveness benchmarks.

What the T-Pot-oriented fork documents
Features described in the T-Pot-oriented fork’s package documentation should be understood as fork- and version-specific, rather than assumed to apply to every h0neytr4p variant.

JSON trap rules and responses
In that fork, traps are JSON rules loaded from files under traps/ at startup. A rule can describe a request match, such as a path, optional headers or parameters, the response, and metadata associated with the trap. This lets an operator shape what the decoy returns when a request matches.
Request logs and payload capture
The fork documents JSON logging for matching requests. It can also capture request payloads and uploaded files for POST, PUT, and DELETE methods. That detail can help with investigation, but captured requests and files may contain sensitive information; limit access to logs and handle retained data according to your security and privacy requirements.
Deployment details
The original repository includes a Docker Compose build-and-run example and describes its T-Pot adjustment as adding Docker support, consolidating two log files into one JSON log, enriching log fields, expanding trap support across ports, and adding payload handling with size limits. The fork’s package documentation lists Docker and Docker Compose as deployment requirements and describes HTTP/HTTPS trap handling on container ports 80 and 443. It also lists Go 1.26 or newer for local Go development. These are statements in the cited fork documentation, including a package version dated 2026-06-12—not verified minimum requirements for every release or variant.

How h0neytr4p relates to T-Pot
T-Pot is a broader multi-honeypot platform that lists h0neytr4p among its included honeypots. Its hardware guidance applies to the T-Pot platform, not to standalone h0neytr4p: Telekom Security’s quick-start guidance specifies at least 8–16 GB RAM and 128 GB of free disk space for T-Pot. Its documentation also distinguishes Hive and Sensor configurations. Check the current T-Pot documentation for the configuration you plan to deploy.
T-Pot warns that operating the platform is the operator’s responsibility and that compromise cannot be ruled out. It advises against putting sensitive data on honeypots. Its documentation also says data is submitted to Sicherheitstacho by default and explains how to disable this through configuration. Verify the current settings and guidance for your deployment. The reviewed sources do not establish a complete standalone hardening guide for h0neytr4p.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where h0neytr4p fits—and what it does not establish
h0neytr4p fits a defensive use case where a team wants to notice web scanners, reconnaissance, or exploit probes aimed at selected decoy paths without running the corresponding vulnerable applications. It is a web-focused component, not evidence of broad protocol coverage or a complete security-monitoring system. The available project documentation does not provide a controlled comparison with other honeypots, performance benchmarks, or quantified outcomes.

- 【Up to 1100 Mbps VPN Speed 】 Hardware-accelerated WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO deliver up to 1100 Mbps VPN throughput, over 3× faster than Brume 2 for smooth remote access and file transfers.
- 【Three 2.5G Ports & Multi-WAN】Tri-port 2.5GbE design with flexible WAN LAN configuration supports multi-gigabit wired setups, dual-ISP Multi-WAN and failover to keep home and SOHO networks online.
- 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
- 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
- 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles
For broader context, the OWASP Honeypot Project describes its goal as identifying emerging attacks against web applications and reporting them to the community to facilitate protection. That community-level aim is distinct from any claim that a particular honeypot detects all emerging attacks.
