Google I/O is Google’s developer-focused event for announcing technology and product updates and showing developers how to work with them. Its program combines keynotes, livestreams, demonstrations, panels, technical sessions and codelabs across areas such as AI and Gemini, Android, Chrome and web development, and Cloud.

What happens at Google I/O?

The event serves two related purposes: Google presents updates across its products and platforms, and developers can learn about the technologies through technical programming and practical resources. In 2026, the program included keynotes, livestreams, panels, demos, professional development sessions and on-demand learning materials. Google’s February 17, 2026 announcement described updates spanning Gemini, Android, Chrome, Cloud and more.

That range makes Google I/O broader than an Android conference. The 2026 Developer keynote recap covered announcements and tools across multiple parts of Google’s developer ecosystem, including AI and agentic development tools. See Google’s recap of the 2026 Developer keynote.

Was Google I/O online or in person?

The 2026 edition combined online livestreams with an in-person component in Mountain View. Google’s announcement invited people to join online, while the event schedule and coverage also associated the program with Mountain View. It is therefore more accurate to describe the 2026 event as livestreamed with an in-person component, rather than purely virtual.

When was Google I/O 2026?

Google I/O 2026 took place May 19–20, 2026. The Google keynote began May 19 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, followed by the Developer keynote at 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time. Google said on-demand sessions and codelabs would be available starting May 21. These are dates for the completed 2026 event, not an upcoming schedule. The official livestream schedule announcement has the event timing and program details.

Format What it offers
Livestreams Watch event programming, including the keynotes, online during the event.
On-demand sessions and codelabs Explore recorded sessions and practical learning resources after the live program. Google said more than 85 sessions, codelabs and other materials were available on demand starting May 21, 2026.
In-person program Attend the Mountain View component of the 2026 event; the sources establish its presence but do not state general access or attendance details here.

The “over 85” figure is Google’s description of on-demand materials, not a count of attendees or an independent measure of the event’s impact.
