Frame generation inserts estimated images between frames a game actually renders. That can make motion look smoother and raise the number of images shown per second, but it does not make the game simulate more often or sample your controls more frequently. Qualcomm’s September 2026 Adreno Neural Fusion documentation says its first release adds one generated frame per rendered frame—and input latency equivalent to one additional rendered frame. On Android, whether you can use it depends on the chipset, the game’s integration and the device implementation, not just the phone’s refresh rate.
What frame generation does
A game normally renders a sequence of complete frames. Frame generation estimates an image to display between two consecutive rendered frames, increasing displayed frame cadence without requiring the game to render every displayed image from scratch.

Qualcomm’s Adreno Neural Fusion (ANF) SDK describes an implementation that uses post-processed color from frames N-1 and N, along with depth and motion vectors from frame N, to estimate scene positions at the midpoint. It warps information from both frames to create the in-between image; user-interface elements are composited afterward. Surfaces hidden in one frame and newly visible in the next have no matching historical image data, so their appearance must be inferred. Qualcomm’s Adreno Neural Fusion SDK documentation describes the technique and its constraints.
Does it increase real FPS or just displayed FPS?
It can increase the number of images displayed each second, but those generated images are not equivalent to newly rendered game frames. They do not represent additional game-simulation steps or input samples. For ANF’s initial release, Qualcomm documents one interpolated image per real rendered frame. A game rendering 30 real frames per second could therefore target 60 displayed images per second through this one-for-one approach, but that is a description of the pipeline—not a measured result or guarantee for a particular game or phone.

- CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
That distinction matters most when judging feel: a higher displayed frame rate can make motion appear smoother while the game’s state and control updates still follow the lower real-frame cadence.
How it affects responsiveness, image quality and power
Input latency
Qualcomm says the first ANF frame-generation implementation costs one additional rendered frame’s worth of input latency. The exact time represented by a frame varies with the underlying frame rate, and real-world behavior depends on the game and device. Higher displayed FPS alone is therefore not proof that controls respond faster. Consider responsiveness alongside smoothness, particularly in competitive or timing-sensitive games. Qualcomm’s SDK documentation states the latency trade-off.

Visual artifacts
An intermediate image is an estimate, not a fresh render. Fast motion, newly exposed surfaces, changing effects and areas around interface overlays are sensible places to look for image instability or artifacts. Qualcomm describes reduced artifacts and improved stability as design goals, but those are vendor statements, not independent comparative test results. Qualcomm’s announcement presents the technology’s intended benefits.
Heat, battery and sustained performance
Generating frames consumes processing resources, even though it does not require rendering a complete new scene for every displayed image. Qualcomm presents ANF as an efficient pipeline, but that does not establish a guaranteed battery-life improvement or sustained performance for a specific handset. Resolution, frame rate, device cooling and session length all affect practical behavior; Qualcomm notes that higher resolution can increase thermals and higher frame rates can drain battery. Android’s developer guidance likewise emphasizes frame pacing and variation by device and environment. No phone-by-phone independent thermal or battery comparison is established in the cited sources. Qualcomm’s announcement and Android Developers’ Game Mode guidance provide that context.

Which Android phones and games support it?
Qualcomm’s September 2026 documentation says ANF support begins with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and higher platforms, with broader support planned. Qualcomm makes the SDK, samples and documentation available to developers. That establishes a platform support threshold, not a list of retail phones or games consumers can use today. The cited material does not enumerate compatible phone models or titles.
Do not infer that a phone supports frame generation from Android version, screen refresh rate or the Snapdragon name alone. The exact system-on-chip, the game’s renderer integration, the device implementation and any in-game setting must all line up. Check the handset and game’s own documentation for explicit support; the cited sources do not establish model-by-model consumer availability.

Frame generation is not upscaling
Upscaling reconstructs or enlarges an image rendered at lower resolution. Frame generation creates an estimated image between rendered frames. They can be combined in a rendering pipeline, but they address different things: resolution and image reconstruction versus displayed motion cadence.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (SGSR) and SGSR2 are upscaling technologies, not frame-generation systems. SGSR2 uses samples from previously rendered frames to improve reconstruction; it does not itself insert an intermediate game frame. Qualcomm reported that its two-pass fragment-shader SGSR2 variant took 0.905 ms when scaling 630×1400 to 1260×2800 (2.0×), under the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 test conditions in its article. That is an upscaling timing, not frame-generation overhead or a cross-device guarantee. The same article reports 1.024 ms at 1.7× and 1.107 ms at 1.5× for that variant. Qualcomm’s SGSR2 article gives the test context.

Other Android performance features that are not frame generation
Android Game Mode includes interventions that can affect workload and pacing without synthesizing frames. Android Developers says FPS throttling is available on Android 13 or later and can help stabilize frame rate and reduce battery consumption. Backbuffer resizing can reduce GPU load and power in applicable conditions, though results vary by device and environment. These are performance controls, not frame-generation features. Android Developers also emphasizes well-paced frames because uneven delivery can noticeably harm perceived performance. Android Developers’ Game Mode guidance explains the interventions.
How to judge a frame-generation implementation
When evaluating a particular Android phone and game, look beyond the displayed FPS counter. Useful questions include:
- Which exact chipset and platform does the feature support?
- Has the specific game integrated frame generation, and does it expose a setting for it?
- What are the real rendered frame rate and displayed frame rate, measured separately?
- How much input latency is added, and is frame delivery consistent?
- Are motion, occlusion boundaries and interface elements stable in the scenes you play?
- What happens to temperature, power use and performance over a sustained session?
- Does the display’s refresh-rate limit constrain the output cadence?
The cited material does not provide controlled consumer-phone comparisons across these measures, so it cannot support a ranking of phones or games.
