In a client-side test, the browser can briefly show the original page before a testing script applies the variation; preventing that flash means making the variant ready before the browser paints, or rendering it on the server in the first place.
What flicker means in an A/B test
A/B testing compares versions of a page or element to learn how visitors respond. In a browser-based, or client-side, test, the page may start rendering before the experiment script has identified or applied a visitor’s assigned variation. If the original content appears and is then replaced, the visitor sees a brief flash of original content (FOOC).

That is different from a flash of unstyled content (FOUC), which occurs when a page’s CSS has not loaded yet. In an A/B test, the page may be styled correctly throughout; the problem is that the visible content changes after the first paint.
The timing behind the flash
- The browser begins loading and rendering the page.
- The experiment code obtains or applies the visitor’s variation.
- The code changes the page’s content or styling to match that variation.
- The browser paints the result.
Flicker occurs if the browser paints the original state before step three finishes. The objective is not simply to load experiment code early: the correct assignment and visual change must be ready before the relevant content becomes visible.
#1 Best Overall
- Scope of application: The spark plug tester is universal and suitable for testing and troubleshooting small or large internal/external engines such as engines, trucks, automobiles, lawn mowers, marine engines and motorcycles. It is the preferred product in any personal or professional machinery store or automobile garage.
- About use: Just connect the tester between the spark plug and the spark plug wire, and it takes about 30 seconds for the internal combustion engine to troubleshoot. If the engine can emit spark, the tester bulb reflects the spark and lights up, so as to quickly find the fault point and bad circuit of the spark plug.
- Excellent material selection: It adopts excellent rubber and metal, high-temperature resistant wire and environmental friendly acetate plastic. It works in high and low temperature environment without impact and is durable.
- Product size: 2.28 inch metal interface, 4.44 inch shaft/lamp housing, 6.53 inch sheath/cable; The internal bulb lasts for several years and is replaced by a transparent housing.
- Service: If you have any questions about the product, please contact us in time, and we will provide you with satisfactory solutions.
Ways to prevent flicker
| Approach | When the variant is applied | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Server-side or edge rendering | Before the server sends the page response | Requires the site architecture and experimentation system to make the assignment available during rendering. |
| Client-side render blocking | Before the browser’s first paint, by briefly holding rendering while a small script runs | Can delay visible content and depends on browser support and the script’s availability. |
| Anti-flicker hide-and-reveal fallback | The page is hidden until experiment initialization completes or a timeout reveals it | Avoids showing the unmodified page but can leave visitors looking at a blank or hidden page while it waits. |
Render the variant on the server
The server, backend, or edge layer assigns the visitor and returns HTML that already contains the chosen version. Since the browser receives the correct variant, it does not need to display one version and then replace it with another. Shopify describes server-side test content as arriving pre-rendered with the correct variant and without an anti-flicker performance cost; that does not mean server-side testing has no engineering or infrastructure requirements. Convert’s developer documentation also lists server-side and edge experimentation alongside client-side experimentation.
Make a client-side decision before first paint
Google Chrome’s modern-web guidance describes placing a small experiment script in the document <head>. For an external script, async allows HTML parsing to continue while the script is fetched; blocking="render" holds painting until the resource is fetched and executed. The script can set a variation attribute on the root element, and CSS can use that attribute to show the chosen version.

This method is for a fast visual decision, not for putting an entire testing platform or analytics workload in the render-blocking path. Chrome’s guidance gives execution under 100 ms as an example performance budget, not a universal or experimentally validated threshold. Keep the blocking work small and load heavier, nonvisual work separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse a hide-and-reveal fallback selectively
Where native render blocking is unavailable, a legacy anti-flicker snippet may hide the page until the experiment initializes, sometimes with a timeout that reveals the page if initialization takes too long. Google’s guidance describes a four-second timeout as typical of historical anti-flicker implementations; it is not a recommended universal setting. Hiding content can prevent visitors from seeing the original version, but the cost is that they cannot see useful page content until the experiment responds or the timeout expires.

- Gives a Visual Check of the Ignition System.
- Quickly diagnose problems with all ignition systems. Connect the tool between the spark plug and the plug wire.
- The tool is double-ended to offer a straight boot and a 90boot on one tool. With the engine running, the tool flashes a mirror image of ignition spark.
Chrome recommends feature-detecting support for blocking="render" and applying a fallback only where necessary, rather than combining the fallback with render blocking in browsers that already support it. Shopify advises removing inactive anti-flicker snippets and closing completed tests.
Choose loading behavior deliberately
Asynchronous loading can reduce the chance that experiment code slows the initial page, but the original content may become visible before the variation is applied. Optimizely’s Web Experimentation guidance describes using a synchronous snippet to prevent flicker while loading variation code asynchronously. This is specific to that product’s implementation, not a rule that applies to every testing platform.

What flicker prevention costs
Holding a page back until a test is ready trades visual consistency for waiting time. Shopify says anti-flicker snippets often add over two seconds to First Contentful Paint (FCP); that is Shopify’s reported common impact, not a measurement for every site. The actual delay depends on the snippet, experiment code, network conditions, and implementation.

A render-blocking third-party script also makes the page depend on that vendor’s resource. Chrome warns that a third-party CDN outage could block rendering and that blocking="render" does not provide a developer-controlled timeout. For performance-critical pages, consider whether the variant can instead be selected and rendered server-side. Use render blocking only when the experiment must change what visitors see in the initial render.

Check performance and clean up inactive tests
- Record a page load in Chrome DevTools’ Performance panel and inspect the time before FCP.
- Compare page performance with the experiment enabled and disabled to identify the test’s contribution to the delay.
- Review real-user monitoring (RUM) data, including FCP and Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), so the assessment includes field experience as well as a lab recording.
- On Shopify, disable anti-flicker code when no test is active, close completed tests, and verify that the snippet is disabled.
Lab and field results answer different questions: a DevTools recording can help locate a delay in a particular load, while RUM shows how visitors experience performance across real sessions. Neither alone proves that an implementation is fast for every visitor.
Browser support for render blocking
The reviewed Chrome guidance lists blocking="render" support in Chrome 105 (September 2022), Edge 105 (September 2022), and Safari 18.2 (December 2024), and says Firefox does not support it. Where unsupported, the attribute is ignored. A client-side test may therefore still flicker unless it uses another fallback or renders the variant on the server. Browser support can change; check current compatibility before relying on this attribute.
