FlexGen is a commercial battery energy storage integrator and software provider. Its HybridOS energy management system (EMS) monitors and controls storage installations, coordinating when they charge or discharge with the batteries, power equipment, site requirements, and grid conditions. HybridOS is the operating and control layer—not a battery or a household battery product.
What FlexGen does
FlexGen says it designs and integrates battery energy storage solutions and provides software to operate them. Its customers include utilities, energy developers, independent power producers, engineering, procurement and construction firms, municipalities, cooperatives, and critical-infrastructure organizations. The company also describes project delivery, analytics, and lifecycle support as parts of its offering. FlexGen’s company website

That distinction matters: a FlexGen project is not necessarily a battery made by FlexGen. The company’s described role is integrating storage equipment and providing operating software; the battery supplier and exact system configuration can vary by project.

A battery energy storage system (BESS) is a coordinated installation rather than a battery container alone. FlexGen’s Battery Storage 101 infographic identifies these components: FlexGen Battery Storage 101
#1 Best Overall
- Battery cells: store electrical energy in chemical form.
- Inverters and transformers: convert and condition electricity for use by the site or grid.
- Battery management system (BMS): monitors and manages battery operation.
- Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC): manages the equipment environment.
- Fire suppression: provides a fire-protection component.
- Energy management system (EMS) and digital controls: monitor the installation and coordinate its operation.
Which equipment is used, and how it is arranged, depends on the project.
How FlexGen storage works
The basic cycle is charge, store, and dispatch. Electricity comes from the grid or a generation source, power equipment manages its flow, and software helps coordinate when the stored energy is used. FlexGen describes the battery, inverter, and grid as communicating through its EMS. FlexGen overview
- Charge: electricity from the grid or a generation source is sent through the system’s power equipment to charge the batteries.
- Store: the batteries hold energy chemically until it is needed.
- Monitor: the BMS and EMS monitor equipment and operating conditions.
- Schedule and control: the EMS manages charging and discharging in line with the site’s operating plan and system limits.
- Dispatch: inverters and related equipment deliver stored power to the site or grid when scheduled or needed, such as during high demand or when grid support is required.
What HybridOS does
FlexGen describes HybridOS as a configurable, hardware-agnostic EMS for energy storage sites and fleets. In practical terms, it is the software and controls layer used to monitor assets and manage their operation—not the batteries themselves. The company lists remote battery control, charge and discharge adjustments, scheduling, grid interaction, automated APIs, safeguards, power dispatch, and performance management among its capabilities. It also says HybridOS can control solar power plants. These functions depend on the configuration implemented for a project. HybridOS product page

What FlexGen’s published performance figures mean
FlexGen’s homepage, as captured in 2026, reports more than 100 completed energy storage projects, more than 25 GWh completed and under contract, and 1.6 million hours of battery runtime. It also reports 99.95% uptime during the 2021 Texas freeze. These are company-published figures; the cited materials do not independently verify them or provide a publication date for the figures themselves. FlexGen homepage
