How to Choose a Compact Travel Charger for a Laptop, Phone, and Tablet

Start with your laptop’s recommended adapter wattage, then check how much power the charger can still deliver to its laptop port when your phone and tablet are plugged in. A charger’s headline total wattage is not the same as the power each device receives. A 65W USB-C Power Delivery (PD) GaN charger is a useful search starting point, not a universal answer: some laptops need 90W or 140W, and multi-device charging can reduce the laptop’s share.

What wattage charger do you need?

There is no single wattage that suits every laptop, phone, and tablet combination. Use the exact laptop model’s recommended adapter wattage as your baseline, then verify the charger’s per-port output for the number of devices you expect to charge at once.

Start with the laptop

Check the manufacturer’s guidance for the laptop’s exact model, year, and configuration. For USB-C-charging Macs, Apple says to use a USB-C adapter that supports USB PD and recommends at least the model’s minimum adapter wattage for the best charging experience. Recommendations vary: some 16-inch MacBook Pro configurations use a 140W adapter, which should not be generalized to other laptops or Mac models. Apple’s Mac power-adapter guidance lists recommendations by model.

A lower-output charger may charge a laptop more slowly or trigger a slow-charger warning. If you often use the laptop while it is charging, matching its recommended adapter wattage is especially important; do not assume that a charger with a lower rating will keep up with use.

INIU Laptop Charger, 65W Type C Charger Fast Charging Block for MacBook
  • [One Charger. Less to Carry] Nearly 30% smaller than Apple’s 70W charger, it stays snug without blocking nearby outlets. Charge 3 devices at once; foldable prongs tuck away to prevent snags and scratches.
  • [65W Laptop-Ready Power] Charge a 14" MacBook Pro to 52%, iPhone 17 Pro to 67%, or Galaxy S26 Ultra to 78% in 30 min. Ready for cameras, drones, handhelds, and more.
  • [A Complete Pro Charging Kit] Includes a 5ft 100W nylon-braided USB-C cable built for everyday bends and pulls, with extra reach for desks, bedsides, hotels, and travel.
  • [Smart Power, Port by Port] USB-C1 delivers 65W solo; C1+C2 gives 45W+20W, C1+A 45W+18W, C2+A shares up to 15W, and all 3 run at 45W + 15W shared.
  • [Stable Power, Without the Guesswork] TempGuard checks heat 1,000×/sec to help reduce heat-related slowdowns and interruptions, limiting excess heat exposure for more battery-friendly charging.

Then check the phone and tablet

Phone and tablet requirements vary by model. As Apple examples, its cited iPad guidance recommends a third-party USB-C adapter with at least 15W output and 100–240V AC input, with specifications varying by model and country or region. For iPhone 15 and later, Apple says a 20W-or-higher USB-C power adapter can provide faster charging. These are Apple device recommendations, not requirements for every phone or tablet. See Apple’s iPad charging guidance and Apple’s USB-C iPhone charging guidance.

Check power sharing before buying

If you plan to charge all three devices together, inspect the manufacturer’s power-sharing chart for that exact combination of ports. A charger may advertise a high total output while allocating only part of it to the laptop when other ports are occupied. Compare the laptop port’s available wattage in the shared setup against the laptop maker’s recommendation.

For example, Apple says its 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter can provide up to 17.5W to each device when a Mac and an iPhone or iPad are connected together. That is an example for this specific adapter, not a general rule for dual-port chargers. Apple’s adapter guidance explains its output allocation.

Match the charger, USB-C PD, and cable

USB PD allows compatible devices and chargers to negotiate power: the charger does not simply force its maximum wattage into every connected device. USB-IF describes PD as providing flexible power delivery alongside data over one cable. Its page describes support for up to 240W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector; that is a standard capability ceiling, not a guarantee that a particular charger, cable, and device will operate at that rate. USB-IF’s USB Charger (USB Power Delivery) page explains the standard.

  • Check the charger’s output profiles and the laptop port’s available wattage, both alone and when other ports are in use.
  • Confirm whether a USB-C cable is included. If you use your own, check that it is rated for the power level the laptop needs.
  • Check the phone and tablet’s connector and charging compatibility; a USB-C port alone does not establish a particular charging speed.

Compare travel practicality, not just wattage

“Compact” has no universal size or weight threshold. Compare manufacturer-listed dimensions and weight, plug arrangement, and port layout alongside charging capacity. A higher-output charger or one with more ports may be larger or heavier, so decide whether the convenience of charging multiple devices at once is worth that trade-off for your trip.

Check the input-voltage range and plug format against the countries on your itinerary. For instance, Apple’s cited iPad adapter guidance specifies 100–240V AC input for the third-party adapter recommendation; verify the input range on the charger you select rather than assuming all adapters match it. You may also need a suitable plug adapter for the destination.

Is a 65W USB-C PD GaN charger enough?

It may be a sensible category to compare if your laptop’s requirements and the charger’s power-sharing table support it. It is not enough information on its own to decide: a laptop that calls for 90W or 140W needs a charger class that can meet that requirement, including when other devices are connected. Search for “65W USB-C PD GaN charger” only as a starting point, then verify the laptop’s specification, shared per-port output, and cable rating.
