Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →File and printer sharing is a set of built-in Windows networking features. It lets trusted devices on a local network open files or folders you choose, and use a printer that is installed on another computer. It is not a switch that exposes everything on your PC. Each file, folder or printer has to be shared on purpose.
The two functions, defined separately
File sharing
You pick a file or folder and grant network users access to it. Sharing a folder makes its contents available too. Windows lets you limit access to specific people or open it to Everyone on that network, according to Microsoft Support’s file sharing guidance.

Printer sharing
You share a printer that is installed on a primary Windows device, and other Windows devices on the same network can connect to it. The host computer must be powered on, connected to the network and set up to share the printer, per Microsoft’s printer sharing page. If the host is off or offline, nobody else can print through it.

Network discovery makes a PC visible to other devices. Microsoft’s instructions for both file and printer sharing tell you to enable it. Discovery alone shares nothing.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Aspect | File sharing | Printer sharing |
|---|---|---|
| What is exposed | Files or folders you select | A printer installed on the host PC |
| Who can access it | Specific people or Everyone on the network | Other Windows devices on the same network |
| Host requirement | The sharing device must be reachable | The host must stay on and connected |
Where it applies: the local network
Microsoft’s instructions cover a local area network, such as computers on the same home or workplace network. To share files over the internet, Microsoft points you to OneDrive, which works differently (Microsoft Support).
Why the network profile matters
Windows assigns a network profile that controls visibility. Per Microsoft’s network settings guidance:
Rank #2
- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Private: the PC is discoverable and file and printer sharing is permitted. Use it only when you trust the people and devices on the network.
- Public: the PC is hidden from other devices and these sharing functions are not permitted. This is the safer choice for places like public Wi-Fi.
A Private profile does not share every file or printer by itself. You still have to share the specific resource and decide who gets access.

- Put the devices on the same trusted local network.
- Set the profile to Private where appropriate.
- Turn on Network discovery and File and printer sharing.
- For files, choose what to share and with whom. For a printer, share the installed printer on its host, then connect from the other device.
Menu paths differ between Windows versions, so follow Microsoft’s current step-by-step pages for the exact clicks. Microsoft’s printer page also notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so check which Windows version each device is running.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
The protocol underneath: SMB
Network file shares rely on Server Message Block. Microsoft Support describes it this way: “Server Message Block (SMB) is a network file sharing and data fabric protocol.” That is useful background, but it does not describe every implementation detail of Windows file and printer sharing. The same Microsoft SMB guidance also covers SMB security, including blocking SMB traffic that should not cross network boundaries.

- Nearby sharing: sends documents, photos, links and other content to nearby Windows devices over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. It is a one-off transfer, not a standing folder or printer share.
- OneDrive: shares files through links and cloud options, so recipients do not need to be on your network.
- HomeGroup: this is historical. Microsoft says it was removed in Windows 10 version 1803, while Windows kept built-in ways to share files and printers. Do not follow HomeGroup instructions today. See Microsoft’s removal notice.
Microsoft describes Nearby sharing and OneDrive on its Share files in Windows page and its nearby sharing page.
