What Is Fiber-Optic Internet and How Does It Work?

Fiber internet sends data as pulses of light through glass strands. Here’s how the connection reaches your home, connects to Wi-Fi, and differs from advertised speed and coverage.

Fiber-optic internet sends data as pulses of light through thin glass strands. With fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) or fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP), the provider’s fiber access network reaches your home or building, where an optical terminal or fiber jack hands the connection to networking equipment. A router or gateway then connects your devices by Ethernet and Wi-Fi.

How does fiber-optic internet work?

  1. Data becomes light. Network equipment encodes digital information into optical signals, commonly using lasers. The Fiber Broadband Association explains that fiber strands carry information as pulses of light and that multiple streams can travel on different wavelengths. Fiber Broadband Association: What Is Fiber?
  2. The access network carries the signal toward your address. Fiber routes data from the provider’s network through its access network to the neighborhood and the subscriber premises. The exact network design can vary by provider.
  3. An optical handoff connects the line to your equipment. At the premises, an optical network terminal or unit (ONT/ONU), or a provider-specific fiber jack, passes the connection to customer networking equipment. Some setups use separate devices; others combine functions or use different labels.
  4. Your home network distributes the connection. A router or gateway connects devices using Ethernet and Wi-Fi. ITU-T Recommendation G.9930 discusses residential gateways and fiber access systems in the premises context: ITU-T Recommendation G.9930.

What FTTH and FTTP mean

FTTH means fiber to the home; FTTP means fiber to the premises. Both describe an access network in which fiber reaches the subscriber’s home or building. They do not, by themselves, specify a particular provider’s equipment, network architecture, or optical access standard.

Does fiber’s capacity guarantee your internet speed?

No. Fiber infrastructure can carry substantial data, but the speed you receive depends on the plan you subscribe to, the provider’s configuration, and the equipment and connections involved. A fiber connection is not a promise that every customer will receive the same speed or that a plan will outperform every cable, DSL, or wireless alternative.

The FCC’s archived consumer FAQ, last reviewed in 2020, notes that experienced speed depends partly on how close the provider brings fiber to the computer and how the service is configured. It also distinguishes fiber access from Wi-Fi, which is a short-range local wireless connection. Because the FAQ is dated, it is useful for that distinction, not as a guide to current plans or equipment: FCC Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau, “Getting Broadband Q&A” (archived copy).

Hitron CODA56 Cable Internet Modem ONLY - DOCSIS 3.1 | 2.5 Gbps | NO WiFi - Requires Router | Xfinity/Spectrum/Cox Compatible | NOT for Fiber/DSL
  • ⚠️ CABLE INTERNET ONLY - NOT COMPATIBLE WITH: Fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, Satellite, or Fixed Wireless. ONLY works with cable providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox. Verify your internet type BEFORE purchase.
  • 🚫 NO WiFi INCLUDED - ROUTER REQUIRED: This is a modem ONLY. You MUST buy a separate WiFi router to get wireless internet. Without a router, only ONE device can connect via Ethernet cable. This does NOT replace your current WiFi router.
  • 🔌 CABLE INTERNET REQUIRED: Works EXCLUSIVELY with cable internet service (DOCSIS) from providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, or Cox. Will NOT work with fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless internet. Contact your ISP to confirm compatibility BEFORE purchasing.
  • 🚀 MULTI-GIG PERFORMANCE: Supports internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. Designed for plans 1 Gbps and faster from certified providers: Xfinity (up to 2.33 Gbps), Spectrum (1 Gbps), Cox (2 Gbps). Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.
  • 💡 SETUP REQUIREMENTS: You need: (1) Cable internet service, (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation. This modem cannot create WiFi networks or connect multiple devices without additional equipment.

Why fiber service and home Wi-Fi can feel different

The fiber access line and your Wi-Fi are separate parts of the connection. Fiber may deliver a strong connection to the home’s networking equipment, while Wi-Fi coverage varies across rooms based on the home’s layout, building materials, and networking hardware. If a device is slow in one room, the cause may be the wireless connection or local network rather than the fiber line itself.

Your provider’s optical terminal or fiber jack is not a router replacement. Some providers let customers use their own router, but equipment rules and port needs depend on the provider and plan. For example, GFiber’s guidance describes using a customer-owned router and calls out Wi-Fi generation and Ethernet port considerations, including faster wired ports for multi-gig plans. Check your provider’s requirements for WAN/LAN ports and supported speeds before replacing equipment: GFiber: Use your own router.

How to check whether fiber is available at your address

In the United States, the FCC National Broadband Map is a useful starting point for provider-reported availability, technology, and maximum advertised download and upload speeds at locations. Providers submit fixed-location availability information twice a year, and users can challenge inaccurate listings. The map is not a measure of actual service performance or affordability, and a listing is not a guarantee of a specific installation experience or price. Confirm available plans and terms directly with providers. More details are available in the FCC map guide.

  • Advertised download and upload speeds, and any available evidence about actual speed and latency.
  • Total price, including installation and equipment fees.
  • Contract, data-use, and cancellation terms.
  • Whether a router and optical equipment are included, and which equipment you may use yourself.
  • Whether the provider can install service at your location and on what terms.

The FCC map helps with reported availability and advertised speeds, but it does not settle price or real-world performance. Fiber’s capacity is an advantage of the technology, not proof that every fiber offer is faster, less expensive, or more reliable than every competing plan.
