Enterprise relationship management (ERM) is an organization-wide approach to coordinating relationships with the groups an organization depends on or affects. It can include customers, suppliers, business partners, employees, shareholders, public institutions, and the wider public. The term describes a strategy for sharing relevant information and coordinating processes—not a single software product.
What enterprise relationship management means
ERM connects relationship work across an organization rather than treating each interaction as an isolated department task. In a vendor glossary, NiCE describes it as a business strategy for working across an organization’s network through transparent data sharing and coordinated processes, with attention to both people and technology. That is a useful description, not a universal formal definition. NiCE’s ERM glossary

The relevant network depends on the organization. SAP’s stakeholder relationship-management material lists shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers, partners, state institutions, and the general public, and notes that each group has different expectations. An organization does not have to include every category for its approach to count as relationship management. SAP stakeholder relationship-management material

Customer relationship management (CRM) focuses on customer relationships. Enterprise relationship management takes a wider view: customer interactions sit alongside relationships with other stakeholders, such as suppliers, employees, and business partners. CRM may be one important part of an organization’s broader relationship approach, but it is not synonymous with ERM.

Software can support that approach without defining it. CRM, human resource management (HRM), and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems may hold information or provide capabilities that help teams coordinate. ERM also requires decisions about communication, information sharing, responsibilities, and business processes; installing software alone does not establish an organization-wide strategy.
| Term | Main focus | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise relationship management | Relationships across an organization’s stakeholder network | A strategy for coordinating communication, relevant information, and processes across groups |
| Customer relationship management | Customer relationships | A narrower relationship-management focus that can form part of a broader ERM approach |
| CRM, HRM, and ERP software | Information and business capabilities | Systems that may support relationship work, but do not by themselves make up the strategy |
ERM can also mean enterprise risk management
The acronym ERM is ambiguous. In governance, compliance, and business-risk contexts, it commonly means enterprise risk management, a separate discipline concerned with uncertainty and its relationship to organizational objectives. NIST’s glossary uses ERM for enterprise risk management, and NIST Baldrige discusses embedding risk management in organizational culture and performance. Is there a formal standard for relationship management?
ISO 44001:2017 is a formal standard for collaborative business relationship-management systems. It specifies requirements for identifying, developing, and managing collaborative relationships within or between organizations. Its application may cover one relationship, several relationships, or identified relationship types across an organization; examples include alliances, partnerships, joint ventures, networks, and extended-enterprise arrangements. It is a related framework, not a complete definition of every use of “enterprise relationship management.” ISO 44001:2017
