End-user computing (EUC) is the collection of devices, applications, access methods, policies, and management processes that lets people use technology for work. It includes the digital workspace employees use and the systems IT relies on to provide and secure it. EUC is broader than virtual desktops: laptops, phones, business apps, endpoint management, and hosted desktops can all be part of it.
What does EUC mean?
EUC stands for end-user computing. In plain language, it describes the work technology people use and the ways an organization makes that technology available and manages it. Amazon Web Services defines EUC as a combination of technologies, policies, and processes for providing workforce access to applications, desktops, and data; Google Cloud and TechTarget describe a broader field that also encompasses endpoints and their management.

Organizations and vendors do not always draw the boundaries identically. In one company, EUC may refer mainly to employee devices and support; in another, it may also include virtual desktops and application delivery. When the distinction matters, clarify which resources and responsibilities the organization includes.

EUC can cover the full chain between a person and the work resources they need—not just the computer on their desk.

- Endpoints: Laptops, desktop computers, smartphones, tablets, and thin clients used to access work resources. Depending on policy, a device may be organization-managed or personally owned.
- Operating systems and business applications: The software people use to perform their work.
- Access and delivery: Ways of making applications, desktops, and data available, including local installation, remote access, virtual desktops, and application streaming.
- Endpoint management and security: The tools and processes IT uses to configure devices, manage access, and protect applications and data.
- Support and operating policies: The rules and processes that shape how users access technology and how IT provisions and maintains it.
That broad scope is why EUC is not another name for a particular device, cloud service, or desktop product.
How EUC differs from VDI, DaaS, and application delivery
VDI and DaaS are ways to deliver desktops within the wider EUC environment. Application virtualization or streaming can deliver an application without providing a complete hosted desktop.

| Term | Meaning | Relationship to EUC |
|---|---|---|
| End-user computing (EUC) | The broad environment of user-facing devices, applications, access methods, policies, and management. | The umbrella term; it can include multiple delivery approaches. |
| Endpoint | A device a person uses to access work resources, such as a laptop, phone, tablet, desktop, or thin client. | A physical access device within the EUC environment. |
| Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) | Desktop environments run on centralized infrastructure and are presented to users remotely. | One way to deliver desktops as part of EUC. |
| Desktop as a service (DaaS) | A hosted desktop delivery model offered as a service. | Another desktop-delivery approach within EUC; the underlying operating-system and infrastructure choices vary by service. |
| Application virtualization or streaming | An application is delivered to a user without necessarily hosting a full desktop in the same way. | An application-delivery approach that can be part of EUC. |
| Endpoint management | Processes and tools for configuring, managing, and securing user devices and their access. | A management function within EUC. |

Organizations use EUC to give employees access to the devices, applications, desktops, and data required for their roles, while coordinating how those resources are provisioned, managed, and secured. The mix may differ across teams: one group might work primarily on laptops with installed applications, while another accesses a centrally hosted desktop or a streamed application.
For example, Microsoft describes Windows 365 as streaming a Windows desktop, apps, settings, and content from Microsoft’s cloud to a Cloud PC. The service can be accessed from Windows, iOS, and Android devices. It is an example of a cloud-hosted desktop approach, not a definition of EUC. See the Windows 365 service description for the product details.
Does EUC mean virtual desktops or cloud computing?
No. Virtual desktops and cloud-hosted desktops are possible parts of an EUC setup, but EUC also includes physical endpoints and other ways to deliver applications. A worker using a managed laptop with locally installed business software is still using an EUC environment even if the organization has no virtual desktop service.

Cloud delivery may change where desktops or applications run and how they are administered, but it is an architectural choice rather than a requirement for EUC. Likewise, using a thin client to connect to a virtual desktop does not, by itself, determine how secure or inexpensive the overall setup will be.
How do organizations choose an EUC approach?
There is no single EUC architecture that fits every organization. A useful comparison looks at the work people do and the trade-offs of each delivery model, rather than assuming that local devices, VDI, or DaaS is always best.
- Device and application coverage: Which devices and operating systems do employees need, and can each approach support the applications their roles require?
- User experience and network dependence: How will the chosen setup perform for users’ day-to-day tasks, including when network access is limited?
- Security controls and data location: Where will sensitive data reside, and what controls are needed for devices, accounts, applications, and remote access?
- Administration and support: What work will IT take on to provision, update, troubleshoot, and secure the environment?
- Scaling and provisioning: How quickly can access be set up or adjusted when staffing or work needs change?
- Licensing and total cost: What costs apply to devices, infrastructure, services, software, and ongoing operations?
AWS presents DaaS as one option for simplifying desktop delivery and supporting flexible work arrangements. It also describes designs in which sensitive data is stored on a virtual desktop and a thin client provides access. Those are possible use cases, not guarantees: security and cost depend on the architecture, controls, licensing, and how the service is used. Its guidance is available in Delivering desktops as a service.
What EUC is not
- It is not just virtual desktops: VDI and DaaS are desktop-delivery models, while EUC also covers endpoints, applications, and management.
- It is not necessarily cloud-based: Physical devices and locally installed applications can be part of EUC.
- It is not an automatic security or savings guarantee: Centralized delivery can support particular security or operating models, but results depend on implementation.
- It is not one fixed product category: The scope varies by organization, so the specific meaning should be made clear in context.
Why the term can be confusing
“EUC” is used at different levels of breadth. Some descriptions emphasize secure access to desktops, applications, and data; others include the devices and management practices surrounding that access. In enterprise IT, the term can also appear in organizational names. For example, NIST’s Zero Trust Architecture documentation notes that VMware’s former End User Computing division was divested and reformed as Omnissa LLC. That corporate use of the phrase does not narrow the general meaning of end-user computing. See NIST’s Zero Trust Architecture documentation.
