Instead of physically moving a lens or camera sensor, it processes captured image data—often shifting a crop of each frame to counter camera movement.
How does EIS work?
A common video approach captures more of the scene than the final video needs. A processor can then select and shift a smaller portion of each captured frame in the direction opposite the camera’s movement. The extra image around the output frame gives it room to compensate for shake.

Motion sensors can help guide this adjustment. In a typical pipeline, a gyroscope measures camera movement and sends motion information to the image signal processor, which uses it to choose a compensating crop. The motion measurements must be synchronized with the frames they describe. InvenSense characterizes EIS as “a jitter compensation method for a video stream” in its application note.

Camera makers can use different sensor margins, motion-estimation methods and processing. GoPro, for example, describes its HyperSmooth system as analyzing camera motion and transforming it into stabilized motion.

How is EIS different from OIS?

Some systems combine both methods. Sony describes hybrid image stabilization for specified Xperia models as using OIS and EIS together; that description should not be assumed to apply to every phone or camera. The Sony support page identifies the models covered.
What are EIS’s tradeoffs and limits?
It may reduce the field of view
Because the processor needs room to shift the frame, EIS can crop the edges of the captured image. GoPro says its HyperSmooth implementation has a stabilization margin of about 5%; that figure describes GoPro’s system, not EIS generally. The company explains the approach in its HyperSmooth overview.

Performance depends on mode and camera
Stabilization may change or become unavailable with particular recording settings. Panasonic’s AU-EVA1 instructions, for example, say its EIS does not operate in a listed 4/3 crop-and-mix sensor mode, has a weaker effect at frame rates of 24 fps or lower, and does not operate while optical stabilization on the lens is active. Those are AU-EVA1-specific operating limits, not general EIS rules. Check the camera’s manual for the exact lens, frame rate and recording mode; Panasonic’s AU-EVA1 operating instructions describe its cases.

A tripod can change the result
Stabilization designed to compensate for handheld movement can sometimes make tripod footage look less natural. Panasonic advises that disabling EIS on a tripod can produce a more natural image on the AU-EVA1. Whether to switch it off on another camera depends on that model’s guidance and the shot.

What should you check on a specific camera?
- Whether stabilization is electronic, optical, or a combination.
- Whether EIS crops the image and how the camera’s field of view changes in the selected mode.
- Which resolutions, frame rates and sensor or lens combinations support stabilization.
- Whether EIS and lens-based OIS operate together, or whether one disables the other.
- Whether the manufacturer recommends changing stabilization for tripod-mounted shots.
For a concise manufacturer definition, HUAWEI Support says, “EIS is an image stabilization technique implemented by cropping images.” Its support article contrasts this digital approach with stabilization using physical camera components.
