A satellite records the measurements; analysts choose the theme and interpret the data to create a thematic map.
How satellite measurements become a thematic map
Different surface materials reflect or absorb different amounts of energy at different wavelengths. A satellite sensor measures energy in selected spectral bands. Classification methods then use differences in those measurements to assign image features to meaningful classes.

The map is therefore an analytical product, not simply a natural-color photograph. The theme—such as vegetation type, land use, or geology—is chosen to answer a particular question. NASA’s Earth Observatory describes multispectral data as a resource for quantitative thematic information, including land-cover type: “The improved ability of multispectral sensors provides a basic remote sensing data resource for quantitative thematic information, such as the type of land cover.” NASA Earth Observatory

Some bands capture signals beyond visible light. Infrared measurements can help distinguish vegetation characteristics that a human eye cannot see in an ordinary color image. Thermal-infrared measurements concern emitted heat rather than just reflected sunlight. More bands can help separate objects, but the result still depends on suitable measurements and analysis.

Why map classes are not ground truth
A class on a thematic map is an interpretation of sensor measurements, not direct confirmation of what is on the ground. Band selection, spatial resolution, observation timing, atmospheric conditions, and the classification method all affect what can be inferred. A map intended for a specific decision may also require validation against independent reference data.
What thematic sensing is used for
The method supports maps and monitoring products for different themes. NASA identifies land-cover classification, vegetation monitoring, geology, and resource management as applications. Landsat band applications also include monitoring plant health and crop growth, mapping minerals and urban areas, and thermal applications such as examining water use through evapotranspiration methods.

Thematic sensing versus the Landsat Thematic Mapper
Thematic sensing or thematic mapping describes a general practice: using measurements and analysis to map a chosen subject. Thematic Mapper, with capitals, is also the name of a particular Landsat instrument, the TM sensor flown on Landsats 4 and 5. The instrument is one example of a sensor used to produce thematic information; its name is not a synonym for the broader method. NASA’s Landsat spectral-band descriptions

Landsat TM: a concrete sensor example
The Landsat 4–5 TM illustrates how bands and resolution vary within one sensor. The USGS glossary describes six visible, near-infrared, and shortwave-infrared bands at 30 m ground resolution, plus a thermal-infrared band at 120 m resolution. NASA specifies that TM’s thermal band covered 10.40–12.50 µm; in the tabulated product specifications, that band was resampled to 30 m. The resampled pixel size does not change the sensor’s original 120 m thermal resolution.

- Spectral fit: Check that the bands capture the signals relevant to the target—for example, red and near-infrared for vegetation or thermal infrared for emitted heat.
- Spatial detail: Find the ground area represented by a pixel and decide whether it is fine enough for the feature being mapped.
- Observation timing: Consider how often the area can be observed with usable data, especially if the subject changes quickly.
- Data compatibility and availability: Confirm that the archive covers the place and time period you need and whether observations from multiple sensors are harmonized.
- Analysis and validation: Match the classification approach to the intended use and determine what reference data are needed to check the resulting classes.
Example of a harmonized data source
NASA’s Harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 (HLS) project combines observations from Landsat 8 and 9 with Sentinel-2 into harmonized, analysis-ready surface-reflectance products. NASA states a global observation frequency of 2–3 days for the project. That figure describes the project’s stated global frequency; it is not a guarantee that every location has a usable observation at that interval. Check the project’s current data access and geographic coverage before choosing it for a particular workflow. NASA HLS project
