How to Hard Reset a Dell XPS 15 Laptop

A Dell XPS 15 hard reset drains residual power without erasing personal files. Follow the steps, then choose the right troubleshooting path if the laptop remains unresponsive.

To hard reset a Dell XPS 15, shut it down, unplug the AC adapter and accessories, then hold the power button for 15–20 seconds. Reconnect the adapter and turn it on. Dell describes this as draining residual power; it does not erase personal files. This is different from resetting Windows or restoring BIOS settings.

Perform a residual-power hard reset

  1. Shut down the XPS 15. If it is frozen, press and hold the power button until it turns off. That forced shutdown is not a factory reset.
  2. Disconnect power and accessories. Unplug the AC adapter and remove external devices such as USB drives, printers, webcams, and memory cards.
  3. Drain residual power. With the laptop disconnected, press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds, as Dell specifies in its hard-reset instructions.
  4. Reconnect and start the laptop. Plug in the AC adapter, then press the power button normally.

Dell says this procedure does not affect personal files. It does not reinstall Windows, restore factory settings, or guarantee a fix for a hardware problem.

Know which kind of reset you need

Procedure What it does When it may be relevant Data and model considerations
Hard reset (residual-power drain) Removes residual electrical charge after shutdown. The laptop is unresponsive or you are troubleshooting a power-related issue. Dell says personal files are unaffected. Its general instructions list XPS laptops.
Windows recovery or reset Repairs, restores, or reinstalls Windows. Windows fails to load or has a software problem that the power procedure does not resolve. Options differ in what they retain or remove. Review the exact option and back up files where possible before proceeding. Dell documents SupportAssist OS Recovery and the Dell OS Recovery Image.
BIOS/UEFI defaults Resets firmware setup settings, not Windows itself. A problem began after firmware settings were changed and you can access BIOS setup. Dell says files, programs, and Windows remain untouched, but settings may need review. The factory-reset option may not restore every setting; check your model’s boot configuration.

For Windows recovery instructions, consult Dell’s SupportAssist OS Recovery guidance and the information for the particular recovery method you plan to use. On supported computers, SupportAssist OS Recovery can start after repeated unsuccessful boot attempts and offers diagnostics, backup, repair, or factory restoration. Dell’s guidance excludes Qualcomm-based computers from SupportAssist OS Recovery and points those systems to Windows Push-Button Reset first.

For BIOS settings, Dell explains the separate BIOS or CMOS reset process. Follow the instructions for your exact XPS 15 model rather than assuming a single firmware menu works across generations.

If the XPS 15 still will not start

Classify what happens after pressing the power button; different symptoms call for different troubleshooting paths. Dell’s startup troubleshooting guidance distinguishes power problems, failures before POST, display problems, and Windows no-boot conditions.

  • No signs of power: Use Dell’s power troubleshooting and diagnostics for your model. A residual-power drain cannot resolve a failed adapter, battery, or other hardware fault.
  • Power comes on, but the Dell logo never appears: This may indicate a no-POST issue. Follow model-specific diagnostics rather than treating it as a Windows reset problem.
  • The Dell logo appears, but Windows does not load: This is a Windows no-boot path. Consider the supported recovery choices for your configuration, taking account of their data-retention effects.
  • The issue followed a BIOS change: If you can enter BIOS setup, restoring defaults may help. Then review the model-specific boot settings, since a defaults reset may not restore all settings.

Should you disconnect the internal battery?

Not for the standard hard reset. The ordinary procedure uses the power button, AC adapter, and external-device disconnection; it does not require opening the laptop. Battery access and service steps vary by XPS 15 generation. For example, Dell’s XPS 15 9520 service manual describes internal battery removal as work intended for authorized service technicians. Do not apply that model-specific procedure to another XPS 15 without its own service guidance.
