EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) is an authentication framework that supports multiple authentication methods. It coordinates an exchange between a device seeking network access and the network; the selected EAP method supplies the specific authentication behavior. EAP is not itself a password method, Wi-Fi encryption standard, or single security algorithm.
What EAP means—and what it does
The IETF defines EAP as “an authentication framework which supports multiple authentication methods” in RFC 3748. In practical terms, EAP provides a common way to carry and coordinate an authentication exchange. A method chosen for that exchange determines how authentication is performed.

EAP typically runs directly over a data-link layer, such as Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) or IEEE 802, without requiring IP for the EAP exchange. That does not mean every network deployment uses EAP in exactly the same way; the framework is used in several network-access settings.

An EAP exchange involves distinct network roles. The authenticator may relay messages to a backend server rather than implementing every authentication method itself. RFC 5247 describes the EAP key-management framework and the relationship between methods and keying material.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Peer: The endpoint seeking network access and participating in the EAP exchange, such as a client device.
- Authenticator: The access point or other network boundary that initiates authentication and controls access while the exchange takes place.
- EAP server: The server that participates in authentication with the peer, often through the authenticator.
- EAP method: The part that performs the specific authentication algorithm. Depending on the method, it may also generate keying material.
What EAP means in Wi-Fi—and how it differs from 802.1X
In enterprise Wi-Fi, IEEE 802.1X provides an access-control setting in which EAP is commonly used. They are related but not interchangeable: 802.1X is the access-control context, while EAP is the framework for the authentication exchange. The selected method determines how the peer and network authenticate.
Authentication and Wi-Fi link encryption are also distinct functions. EAP is not the encryption applied to Wi-Fi traffic. Some EAP methods produce keying material that can be transported and used by the network, as described in RFC 5247; that does not make EAP itself an encryption protocol.

EAP is not the same as EAP-TLS
EAP-TLS is one method that operates within the EAP framework. Its security properties should not be attributed to every EAP method. For example, RFC 5216 defines certificate-based mutual authentication and key derivation for EAP-TLS. RFC 9190 specifies EAP-TLS with TLS 1.3; it states that this version provides forward secrecy, does not disclose the peer identity, and mandates certificate revocation checking.

Other TLS-based EAP types have their own requirements. RFC 9427 addresses the use of TLS 1.3 with those types, including updated key derivation. For any deployment, the method and its configuration matter: a general statement that a network “uses EAP” does not establish whether it uses certificates, mutual authentication, identity protection, or a particular TLS version.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
What EAP does not guarantee
EAP supplies a framework; it does not make all methods equally secure or provide every behavior itself. RFC 3748 specifies duplicate elimination and retransmission support while relying on lower layers for packet ordering. It does not provide fragmentation support, although individual methods may provide it.
For wireless access to federal networks, NIST SP 800-120 covers security requirements for EAP-supported authentication methods with key establishment. That is scoped guidance for federal wireless access, not a general endorsement of every EAP method.

Recent standards update
In May 2026, RFC 9965 defined the eap.arpa domain for a specific provisioning signal: an EAP peer can use a Network Access Identifier (NAI) to indicate that it seeks limited, unauthenticated network access. The RFC updates RFCs 5216, 9140, and 9190. It adds a provisioning mechanism; it does not change the basic meaning of EAP.
