1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDTS Digital Surround is a discrete, channel-based audio format that can carry up to 5.1 channels. To hear it, the content must be encoded in a supported DTS format and the playback chain—such as a receiver—must be able to decode it. A 5.1 speaker system by itself is not enough.
What DTS Digital Surround means
DTS Digital Surround is a surround-sound format that stores audio in separate channels rather than treating it as a single stereo signal. DTS describes support for up to 5.1 discrete channels. The “5” means five main channels; “.1” is the low-frequency effects (LFE) channel.

For gaming, DTS identifies these six positions: left, center, right, surround left, surround right, and LFE. In a home theater, the main channels correspond to speakers around the listening area, while the LFE channel carries low-frequency effects for a subwoofer. The channel layout describes the audio; it does not guarantee that every recording or playback system uses all six channels.
DTS’s published technical figures
DTS’s undated product page lists capabilities of up to 5.1 discrete channels, 48 kHz sampling, 24-bit audio, and a constant bit rate of up to 1.5 Mbps. These are the format capabilities DTS publishes, not a measurement of every DTS-encoded track or a guarantee about a particular device’s output.

DTS also says the format provides “over twice the audio resolution of other standard DVD audio formats.” That is DTS’s own comparative marketing claim; it should not be read as an independently verified comparison.
What you need to play DTS Digital Surround
Playback depends on a compatible chain: the source must contain DTS-encoded audio, and the connected device or receiver must decode the relevant DTS format. DTS describes DTS-HD Digital Surround decoding for streaming, file-based, and disc-based media, with output up to 5.1 channels. Its gaming materials specifically describe 5.1 playback via S/PDIF. Support varies by source, decoder, connection, and receiver, so verify the specifications for the exact models and content involved.

- Content: The movie, game, or other source must include an appropriate DTS-encoded audio track.
- Decoder: The source device or an AV receiver must support decoding that DTS format. A compatible receiver is a common part of a multichannel home-theater setup.
- Connection: The connection must carry the required audio signal and channel configuration. Check the device manuals for supported formats and connection behavior.
- Speakers: A 5.1 speaker system can reproduce the six channel positions, but speakers do not decode DTS on their own.
Do not assume that a TV, soundbar, console, streaming service, computer, or receiver supports DTS just because it handles surround sound or has a DTS label. The device model, input/output path, and specific content all matter.

| Name | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| DTS Digital Surround | Discrete, channel-based surround audio, documented by DTS for up to 5.1 channels. |
| DTS:X | A separate immersive audio technology. DTS describes it as adaptable to speaker layouts and lists different supported decoding configurations for streaming and optical discs. |
| DTS Headphone:X | A headphone-focused surround technology, not another name for DTS Digital Surround. |
| DTS-HD | A related DTS format name. DTS materials describe DTS-HD Digital Surround decoding for multiple media types; it should not be treated as interchangeable with DTS Digital Surround or DTS:X. |
These names identify different technologies or format contexts. If a receiver or media file lists one of them, check its manual or track details rather than assuming the label guarantees a particular channel layout or playback method.

How to check a receiver or playback setup
- Look up the exact source-device model and confirm it can output the DTS format used by your content.
- Check the content’s audio-track information for DTS encoding and the available channel configuration.
- Verify that the receiver or other decoder supports that format, including the relevant input and output connection.
- Confirm the speaker configuration is set up for the channels you want to hear, such as 5.1, and follow the manufacturer’s connection and setup guidance.
When comparing equipment, focus on codec decoding support, connection type, supported channel count, and speaker layout. A general “surround” or “DTS” mention is not sufficient to establish compatibility for a particular source-to-speaker chain.
