What Is a USB External Drive?

A USB external drive adds storage outside a computer and connects through USB. Learn what the term means, how HDDs and SSDs differ, and why one drive alone is not a backup.

A USB external drive is a separate storage device that connects to a computer or another compatible host through a USB port. It can store files outside the computer’s internal storage or move them between compatible devices. The term usually refers to an external hard disk drive (HDD) or solid-state drive (SSD); a USB flash drive is a smaller, distinct kind of portable storage device.

What “USB external drive” means

“External” means the storage is outside the host computer and can be connected or removed. “USB” describes how it connects, not how it stores data. An external drive may use an HDD, which stores data on moving disks, or an SSD, which uses solid-state memory. The wider portable-storage category also includes USB flash drives. NIST’s glossary includes external or removable HDDs and SSDs, as well as flash-memory devices, in that category.

SanDisk Support notes that external drives may also be called “USB Drives” or “Direct Attached Storage (DAS).” In everyday usage, though, “USB drive” can also mean a thumb-sized flash drive. If the distinction matters, say “external HDD,” “external SSD,” or “USB flash drive.”

How it connects and works

A USB cable links the external drive to a USB port on a host device. The host and drive communicate using USB, and the port and supported USB interface affect the connection’s potential performance. Microsoft Learn’s USB guidance discusses earlier USB revisions; those revision-specific figures should not be treated as universal limits for current devices. Check the drive’s connector and interface against the host’s available port, and consult the current specifications for exact compatibility and speed.

SanDisk’s setup guidance says a portable external drive should appear when connected and can be used for storage without separate software. Depending on the drive and host, setup, formatting, or troubleshooting may still be needed. When you have finished using it, use the operating system’s safe-eject function before disconnecting it.

External HDD or SSD: what is the difference?

Type General characteristics May suit
External HDD Often offers generous capacity at a lower cost per storage unit; it has moving parts. People prioritizing capacity and cost over frequent fast access.
External SSD Generally faster and has no moving parts. People who access files frequently or value portability.

These are category-level tendencies, not guarantees for every product. Actual speed, durability, and price depend on the individual drive and its connection. Dell describes the broad HDD and SSD trade-offs; no specific drive or benchmark is established here.

What to consider when choosing one

  • Storage technology: Decide whether an HDD’s capacity-and-cost emphasis or an SSD’s speed-and-portability emphasis better fits your use.
  • Capacity: Choose enough space for the files you intend to store, with room for future additions.
  • How you will use it: Consider how often you will access or transfer files and whether the drive will travel with you.
  • Connection: Confirm that the drive’s connector and supported USB interface work with the host device’s port.

These factors help narrow the category, but they do not establish compatibility or performance for a particular model.

Is an external drive a backup?

It can hold another copy of your files, but having only one copy on one external drive is not a complete backup. SanDisk Support states: “Moving files from a computer to an external drive is not a backup unless there are duplicate files stored on another device or location.” Keep a separate copy on another device or location if you need backup protection.
