It does not introduce a new DNS record type, and it can operate over either multicast DNS (mDNS) or conventional unicast DNS.
What DNS-SD means
DNS-SD describes how clients and services use existing DNS resource records to advertise and discover services. A client specifies a service type and a domain; DNS-SD lets it retrieve the names of matching service instances and then look up information needed to try to connect.

In RFC 6763, published by the IETF in February 2013, Stuart Cheshire and Marc Krochmal describe a mechanism that lets a client discover a list of named instances of a desired service using standard DNS queries. The specification defines a convention for naming and structuring those queries and records; it does not change DNS message structure or add resource-record types. RFC 6763
How the DNS-SD records work together
Discovery is a sequence of lookups. Each record answers a different question:

- PTR: Which service instances are listed? A client queries a service type in a domain. The PTR response identifies zero or more named instances.
- SRV: Where should the client try to connect? For a chosen instance, the SRV record supplies a target host name and port.
- TXT: What additional information is advertised? A TXT record associated with the instance can carry structured key/value information. It may help describe the service, but it does not replace the service’s own protocol negotiation.
- A or AAAA: What IP address does the host name resolve to? The client can resolve the SRV target host name to an IPv4 or IPv6 address, then attempt to contact the service using its application protocol.
So PTR finds the listed instances, SRV points to a host and port, TXT offers additional instance information, and A or AAAA resolves the host name to an address. DNS-SD locates advertised services; it does not prove that a service is reachable, available, or compatible with the client. RFC 6763 RFC 2782
DNS-SD versus mDNS and Bonjour
DNS-SD and mDNS are different things
DNS-SD is the service-discovery convention: it defines how DNS records and queries identify service instances. mDNS is one way to use DNS on a local link without relying on a conventional DNS server. DNS-SD can use mDNS for zero-configuration local discovery, or use ordinary unicast DNS when services are registered in configured DNS domains. The unicast arrangement will usually require configuration, such as selecting registration domains and arranging authorization for DNS updates. RFC 6763

- VLAN Network Segregation: This router includes five preconfigured VLANs that isolate IoT devices, guest users, and work systems into separate, secure networks. Each LAN port and every WiFi SSID can be assigned to a VLAN, giving you complete control over how traffic flows inside your home.
- Dual VPN Client and Server Support: The router works as both a VPN client and a VPN server, supporting OpenVPN, IPsec, and WireGuard. You can route selected VLANs through a VPN while keeping others on your regular ISP connection, giving each device group the exact level of privacy it needs.
- Full WiFi 6 on Both Bands: With dual-band WiFi 6 support, the router delivers modern wireless performance across 2.4GHz b/g/n/ax and 5GHz a/n/ac/ax. It improves capacity, stability, and speed while remaining compatible with older devices, making it ideal for busy homes with many connections. Wi-Fi Mesh is available after firmware update.
- High-Performance Hardware Architecture: Powered by the IPQ6000 quad-core ARM processor at 1.2GHz, along with 128MB flash, 256MB RAM, and hardware NAT acceleration, the router handles multitasking, streaming, VPN traffic, and VLAN isolation smoothly without slowing your network.
- Flexible and Powerful Parental Controls: You can use trusted services like OpenDNS, CleanBrowsing, and Cloudflare for filtering, then add custom block lists, allow lists, and schedules. The router includes defenses against common bypass attempts, letting families create rules that match each user. Best of all, it's subscription free!
Bonjour is Apple’s broader technology suite
Bonjour is Apple’s name for a suite that includes link-local addressing, mDNS, and DNS-SD; it is not another name for DNS-SD alone. Apple’s documentation describes Bonjour service registration using related PTR, SRV, and TXT records and provides a DNS-SD API for advertising and discovering services. On Apple platforms, an app that accesses the local network needs an NSLocalNetworkUsageDescription entry. That is platform-specific app guidance, not a universal DNS-SD protocol requirement. DNS-SD helps a client find service instances by type rather than requiring a user or app to know each instance’s host name and port in advance. After discovery, the client still has to connect using the service’s application protocol and handle the result. A DNS-SD response is an advertisement, not a guarantee that the advertised endpoint will respond or that the client can use it.

DNS-SD can also expose information through advertised instance names, host names, and TXT data. The privacy implications depend on what a deployment publishes and who can query it. RFC 8882 discusses privacy and security requirements for DNS-based service discovery. RFC 8882
