DisplayPort Alt Mode is a feature that lets a compatible USB-C port carry DisplayPort video and audio to a display. But a USB-C connector does not automatically support video: the source device, cable, and any adapter or dock must all support the intended setup.
What does DisplayPort Alt Mode mean?
USB-C describes a connector. DisplayPort Alt Mode describes one way a compatible USB-C connection can carry DisplayPort audio and video. It is not a guarantee that every USB-C port or cable can output a picture.

VESA says its DisplayPort logo on a USB-C device indicates VESA-certified Alt Mode support. If there is no clear logo, check the device maker’s technical specifications for explicit DisplayPort Alt Mode or USB-C video support. VESA’s 2016 compliance-test announcement describes the feature and certification context.

When the feature is supported, the USB-C port can assign some or all of its high-speed lanes to DisplayPort. The connection also uses other signals in the connector for DisplayPort’s AUX channel and hot-plug detection, as VESA explained when it published the first Alt Mode standard on September 22, 2014. VESA’s 2014 announcement describes the original specification.

Lane allocation matters because USB-C can carry video and USB data over the same cable, but not without trade-offs. Assigning all four high-speed lanes to DisplayPort leaves no such lanes for simultaneous SuperSpeed USB data. Assigning fewer lanes to video can leave lanes for USB data, while reducing the bandwidth available to the display. The exact behavior depends on the host, cable, and connected devices.
Does every USB-C port support DisplayPort Alt Mode?
No. The connector shape alone does not show whether the device implements Alt Mode. Check the specifications for the particular port on the laptop, tablet, phone, or other source device. A USB-C monitor or adapter cannot create video output if the source port does not support a compatible display path.

Also distinguish native DisplayPort Alt Mode from DisplayPort carried by USB4 or Thunderbolt. Those technologies can also connect a device to a display, but they use a separate tunneling path rather than native Alt Mode.
What can I connect to a USB-C port with Alt Mode?
A compatible source can connect directly to a USB-C monitor, or reach a display with a different input using an appropriate adapter. VESA identifies DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, and VGA as possible display destinations when used with suitable adapters. The adapter must match the display’s input, and the source still needs to support Alt Mode.

What do the bandwidth and display figures mean?
Published figures describe standard capabilities, not what every USB-C port can deliver. In its April 29, 2020 announcement of DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0, VESA said the mode could carry up to 80 Gbps of DisplayPort video using all four high-speed lanes, or up to 40 Gbps while delivering SuperSpeed USB data simultaneously. These are Alt Mode 2.0 figures, not universal USB-C speeds. VESA’s Alt Mode 2.0 announcement gives the dated figures.
VESA’s June 2019 DisplayPort 2.0 announcement offered standard-level examples such as one 16K display at 60 Hz with HDR and Display Stream Compression (DSC), or two 4K displays at 144 Hz without compression. Those examples do not establish that a particular laptop, cable, dock, or monitor can support those configurations. VESA’s 2019 announcement provides the examples.

- Durable and Thoughtful Design: Premium construction combines a sleek black housing with a durable short pigtail cable; the tethered cable wraps securely around the USB-C to DisplayPort adapter to help protect the cable and connector during storage, travel, and everyday use
- Wide Compatibility: Supports high-resolution video with compatible modern hardware; the USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 adapter works with Nvidia RTX 4000 Series and AMD Radeon RX 7000 Series graphics cards, as well as laptops with USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 ports, including systems with 11th Gen Intel Tiger Lake, 12th Gen Intel Alder Lake, or newer Intel processors with Intel Iris Xe graphics; host USB-C port must support video output through DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4, or Thunderbolt
Actual resolution, refresh rate, color and HDR support depend on the DisplayPort generation, lane allocation, and the capabilities of every device and link component. Compression support can also matter. For multi-monitor use, check whether the host and dock support Multi-Stream Transport (MST), and verify the supported display combination in their specifications.

Can DisplayPort Alt Mode also carry power?
In a 2016 standards announcement, VESA described a USB-C connection supporting DisplayPort audio and video, SuperSpeed USB data, and up to 100 watts of power. That dated capability is not a promise that an arbitrary port, cable, dock, or display supplies or accepts 100 watts. Check the power specifications of the specific devices and cable. VESA’s announcement describes the capability.

How should I check compatibility before connecting a display?
- Check the source port: Find the device’s technical specifications and confirm that the specific USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or USB-C video output.
- Check the display input: Identify whether the monitor accepts USB-C, DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, or VGA.
- Choose the connection path: Select a suitable cable, adapter, or dock for those ports. An adapter changes the connection path; it cannot add video output to an incompatible source.
- Verify the target mode: Compare the host, cable, adapter or dock, and monitor specifications for your desired resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and color configuration.
- Check data and multi-display needs: If you need SuperSpeed USB data at the same time as video or want multiple monitors, confirm the lane configuration and MST support for the actual devices.
VESA maintains a listing of certified components, including USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode cables. Certification or a cable label does not remove the need to check whether the host and display support the required mode.
