Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A PCIe 5.0 SSD can run slower than its advertised maximum if it is installed in a Gen4 M.2 slot, negotiates fewer lanes than expected, or shares bandwidth with another device. But there is no evidence that Gen5 drives generally run at half speed. First check the link generation and lane width for the exact M.2 connector in use; then compare benchmark results with the drive’s model- and capacity-specific specifications.
What “half speed” can mean
The phrase describes several different situations, and they are not interchangeable:

- Generation limit: a Gen5 SSD installed in a Gen4 slot operates at Gen4 speeds. That reduces the interface’s theoretical bandwidth compared with Gen5, but it does not mean every application will run twice as slowly.
- Lane-width limit: a connection using fewer lanes than expected can reduce available bandwidth. A four-lane drive negotiating a two-lane link is a different issue from a Gen5 drive negotiating Gen4.
- Benchmark result: a result below a published maximum may reflect the test, workload, drive capacity, or operating conditions rather than a faulty or misconfigured link.
No available topic-wide measurement establishes what share of PCIe 5.0 SSDs run at half speed, or even that this is a common outcome. Treat the claim as a possibility to check in a specific system, not a general rule.
How much bandwidth Gen5 adds—and what that does not promise
SanDisk/WD’s technical brief gives approximately 4 GB/s per PCIe 5.0 lane. For a typical four-lane M.2 2280 NVMe SSD, it describes a theoretical maximum of 16 GB/s, compared with 8 GB/s for Gen4. These are interface-bandwidth figures, not guaranteed application speeds. A drive’s own published performance may also fall below the interface ceiling.

For example, SanDisk/WD lists the WD_BLACK SN8100 at up to 14,900 MB/s sequential read for 1TB–4TB models, and up to 14,000 MB/s sequential write for 2TB–4TB models. Those are manufacturer maximums, not independent test results or a promise for a particular PC.
WD says Gen5’s differences from Gen4 are most evident in sequential and random I/O. A sequential-throughput maximum therefore cannot, by itself, establish how much faster a PC will boot, a game will load, or everyday tasks will feel.

Why a Gen5 SSD may not reach its expected link speed
The M.2 slot may be Gen4, not Gen5
SanDisk/WD says PCIe 5.0 SSDs are backward compatible with Gen4 slots, but operate at Gen4 speeds in them. A motherboard may have several M.2 connectors with different capabilities. WD notes that the slot nearest the CPU is typically the only Gen5-capable M.2 slot, but that is vendor guidance rather than a universal layout. Check the manual for your exact board and the support notes for your CPU.
The link may have fewer lanes than the drive expects
A connector’s shape does not prove its generation or lane width. Confirm the documented maximum for the specific M.2 connector and the negotiated link generation and width in a system or vendor utility. Compare what the utility reports with the motherboard’s specifications; do not infer an x4 Gen5 connection just because the SSD fits or the board is marketed as Gen5-ready.

Another device may share lanes or bandwidth
Lane allocation is motherboard-specific. MSI’s X870E/X870 overview, for example, shows differing arrangements by board model: some list M2_2 sharing CPU lanes with USB4, while other configurations share chipset lanes between M.2 connectors or expansion slots. MSI says those published configurations apply to Ryzen 7000 and 9000 processors and directs readers to individual board pages for Ryzen 8000 limitations.
The MEG Z890 ACE is another specific example. MSI says PCI_E1 runs at x8 and PCI_E2 at x4 when a Gen5 M.2 device is installed in M2_4. The page says M2_4 defaults to a chipset connection and can support PCIe 5.0 x4 from the CPU after manual BIOS adjustment. These examples do not describe all boards; they show why the connector’s manual and configuration notes matter.

Diagnose your system in order
- Record the hardware and configuration. Identify the SSD model and capacity, CPU, motherboard model, M.2 connector in use, and relevant BIOS settings.
- Check the connector’s documented capability. In the motherboard manual or specification page, find the exact connector and check its PCIe generation and lane width with your installed CPU. Read notes on shared lanes, USB4, expansion slots, and CPU-specific restrictions.
- Inspect the negotiated link. Use an appropriate system or vendor utility to read the link generation and width, then compare them with the connector’s documented maximum. The available sources do not establish one universal diagnostic application.
- Choose a matching performance test. Compare a drive’s sequential maximum with a suitable sequential test, and use a sustained workload to assess sustained behavior. Check that the tested drive capacity and conditions align with the manufacturer’s stated conditions where those are given.
- If the link is correct but results are low, investigate the test and drive state. Workload, thermal behavior, firmware, drive condition, and test method may affect results. The available sources establish no universal temperature threshold that diagnoses a Gen5 speed problem.
When an expansion card is—and is not—the answer
A multi-drive adapter is not a generic fix for a slow single SSD. ASUS says its Hyper M.2 x16 Gen5 Card supports up to four M.2 SSDs for RAID functions, but support depends on CPU and motherboard design; it advises updating the BIOS and configuring bifurcation. The card includes a heatsink and active fan. Consider this type of card only when the system supports its requirements and the goal is multi-drive expansion.
