Direct thermal printing makes an image by heating a chemically coated, heat-sensitive surface on the media itself. The heated areas darken to form text, graphics or barcodes, so the printer uses no ink, toner or ribbon. The key trade-off is that the media can be affected by heat, light and abrasion, making the method a common fit for receipts and other short-life prints rather than every durable-label need.
How direct thermal printing works
A thermal printhead contains individually controlled heating elements. As compatible media moves beneath the printhead, selected elements heat selected spots on its coated surface. Those spots discolor, creating the image. Zebra describes this process in its direct thermal glossary.

Because the image forms in the media, direct thermal printing needs heat-sensitive media designed for the process, but no ink, toner or ribbon. Ricoh likewise explains that direct thermal printers use heat-sensitive paper rather than ink or toner in its thermal printer FAQ.
Direct thermal vs. thermal transfer
Both methods use a heated printhead, but they form images differently. Direct thermal darkens a coating on the media; thermal transfer uses heat to move material from a ribbon onto a substrate. That difference affects supplies, media choices and durability.

Common uses and the durability trade-off
Direct thermal is used for receipts, shipping labels, barcode labels, tickets, patient wristbands and visitor identification. Removing ribbon, ink and toner simplifies replenishment, but it does not make the image permanent. Heat can darken the media and obscure the print; prolonged light exposure and abrasion can also reduce readability. Some media has a topcoat to improve resistance, but the right choice depends on actual exposure and how long the print must remain readable. Zebra and Ricoh describe these exposure limitations in their printer guidance and thermal printer FAQ.
There is no single useful lifespan that applies to all direct thermal output: media construction and storage or use conditions vary. For long-term identification or harsh environments, check product-specific media specifications rather than assuming direct thermal stock will hold up.

What media and printer compatibility to check
Choose stock explicitly made for direct thermal printing, and confirm that the printer supports direct thermal mode. Manufacturer guidance distinguishes direct thermal media from thermal transfer stock and treats compatibility as model-specific. Brother explains the print-method setting in its Direct Thermal or Thermal Transfer instructions; Brady also explains direct thermal printing and media.

- For receipts: match paper width and roll dimensions to the printer.
- For either: consult the printer documentation; a thermal printer is not automatically compatible with every method or media type.
Does a thermal printer need ink or toner?
A direct thermal printer does not: it creates the image by heating the coated media. Do not apply that answer to every printer described as “thermal,” however. Thermal transfer printers use a ribbon, and the printer and stock must support the selected method. Ricoh’s FAQ on thermal printers distinguishes heat-sensitive paper from ink or toner.
