Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365: what is the difference?
The simplest distinction is how the services are configured and assigned. Azure Virtual Desktop gives organizations flexibility to configure Azure-hosted desktop and app virtualization. Windows 365 assigns a dedicated Cloud PC to an individual user and is delivered as SaaS, with Microsoft managing the underlying infrastructure.

These are broad service-model distinctions, not a complete cost, plan, or licensing comparison. The right fit depends on an organization’s deployment needs and current eligibility and licensing requirements.
What can Azure Virtual Desktop provide?
Azure Virtual Desktop can deliver a complete Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows Server desktop experience, or make selected applications available remotely. An organization can assign a desktop to one user in a single-session configuration, or use multi-session configurations to support multiple users on shared resources. Which arrangement is used depends on how the organization designs and administers its environment.

How do you connect to a virtual desktop?
For Azure Virtual Desktop, an administrator first needs to assign you at least one desktop or application. You then sign in using a supported client and your account. Microsoft documents access from desktop and laptop computers, tablets, smartphones, web browsers, and other form factors; available features differ by platform. Its connection guidance recommends Windows App, which replaces the Remote Desktop client. Check Microsoft’s current connection instructions for the supported client and steps for your device.

- Ask your administrator for access. They must assign a desktop or application before it appears for you.
- Install or open a supported client. Use the client Microsoft supports for your platform, or the web option where available.
- Sign in with your work or school account. Select the assigned desktop or app to start the remote session.
Does a virtual desktop subscription include Windows and Office?
Do not assume that access to a virtual desktop includes every Windows or Microsoft 365 license your organization needs. Azure Virtual Desktop requires eligible licensing for each accessing user; requirements depend on the session-host operating system and whether use is internal or external. Microsoft also states that its per-user access license grants access rights but is not a full replacement for Windows or Microsoft 365 licensing, and does not include Microsoft Office, Microsoft Defender XDR, or Universal Print. Is a Microsoft virtual desktop the same as a regular remote desktop?
Both let a user interact with a computer environment remotely, but “Microsoft virtual desktop” commonly refers to a cloud-hosted service such as Azure Virtual Desktop or Windows 365. The remote Windows environment is hosted and administered separately from the device you use to connect. A local desktop, by contrast, runs Windows on that physical computer. The phrase can also be confused with virtual desktops that organize multiple workspaces on one local PC; those do not necessarily mean a cloud-hosted Windows computer.
