Its changing pulse density reflects the audio signal’s amplitude. Unlike PCM—the encoding used for CD audio—DSD does not describe the signal as multibit sample values at a sampling rate. The formats encode audio differently; that distinction alone does not establish that one sounds better.
What does DSD mean in audio?
DSD stands for Direct Stream Digital. In Sony’s description, it uses a one-bit digital pulse-density signal: the density of the stream’s pulses varies with the audio signal. PCM, or pulse-code modulation, represents audio using sample values, a sampling frequency, and bit resolution. These are different ways of encoding digital audio, not different guarantees of sound quality. Sony’s DSD overview explains the distinction.

What DSD rates are used?
Sony’s 1999 SACD launch material specifies DSD at 2.8224 MHz, 64 times the 44.1 kHz sampling rate associated with CD. Sony’s support guide, accessed in 2026, also describes DSD at 5.6 MHz, approximately 128 times that CD rate. The guide rounds the lower rate to 2.8 MHz. These figures describe the DSD stream’s rate; they should not be confused with PCM bit depth. Sony’s 1999 announcement and its DSD support guide provide the cited rates.
Is DSD the same as SACD?
No. DSD is an audio encoding method; Super Audio CD (SACD) is a consumer disc format built around DSD. Sony introduced SACD in 1999 as the first consumer audio format to use DSD. Sony’s professional audio history records support for stereo and multichannel playback. The relationship does not mean every SACD player, computer, or audio setup can play every DSD file. How can you play DSD files?
DSD playback depends on the compatibility of the whole signal path: the audio file, playback software, connection, and output hardware. A DSD-capable USB DAC is one possible way to play files, but “DSD-capable” is not enough detail by itself. Check the specific device’s supported rates, file formats, and input method. For example, Sony’s 2013 UDA-1 specification lists DSD input at 2.8 MHz and 5.6 MHz; that is a documented example, not a recommendation or confirmation of current availability. Sony’s support guide also documents a headphone amplifier that does not support DSD files, illustrating why compatibility must be checked model by model. UDA-1 specifications and the DSD support guide provide those details.
Does DSD sound better than PCM?
The encoding difference does not by itself prove that DSD sounds better. Sony describes DSD’s design goals and theoretical playback-frequency range, but those vendor descriptions do not establish a general audible advantage over PCM. A meaningful comparison depends on the particular source and mastering, playback equipment, listening conditions, and personal preference—not just the format label. The cited sources establish format descriptions and compatibility information, not a controlled finding that DSD is inherently superior.
